SVCHOST is a background program that basically tells other programs how to operate. On my computer I have 6 instances of it running at any given time, but if you're talking about literally ten, you may have other stuff running in the background that's governed by SVCHOST, but never shows up on the task manager. In that case, if you're using XP, I'd take a peek at this: www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=253

I've used this on all my computers since the first time I read it, with my own personal exceptions (like desktop background and other itty bitty things I like having around.) But if you have 10 instances of SVC running, I'd say it's time to use an anti-spyware program and it's also time to go through your start up list and clear out unused programs.

Keith has the right of it. svchost is the background host that manages the (far too many) services used by XP. I also have 6 instances running, and thats -with- various unnecessary services disabled. However, the ones that are running take up little memory. When Idle, I only usually have about 300MB of RAM (usually a little less) taken up of my 2.5GB.

Rather than use tuneup software, I prefer looking for guides that tell me -exactly- which services do what, and how important they are, and whether or not they are a potential security risk. And then I go and manualy disable them in services.msc list. But that's just my preference. Glad you have things running better. :)

if you want more info about what all these background processes are, i recommend installing the trial version of 'security task manager' (google it...here's a screenshot)

i bought this thing. it doesn't work perfectly on vista yet, but it will in future versions. each process gets a threat level warning, and there are descriptions as to what the process is supposed to do. as well as the company of origin, when available. you can also right click on something and it takes you right to a database page where other users have commented on the specific process.

the trial version itself will show you everything you want to know. but it's not too expensive to buy and get the capability to quarantine stuff and stop it from starting automatically, etc.
