Ok, I just added a song to my profile: Wastin Time. This was done in my basement studio. Recorded guitar & mando via DI and rode NT5 (one on guitar, one on mando). They played at the same time.
Vocals sung into Studio projects C1 and B1, into my yamaha mg16/4 for preamps.
Tracked and mixed into reaper, effects are reaper's included FX.
Oh yeah, I played bass on this, after they tracked. That's my SR400 fretless direct into the mixer line-in.
I'm open to any and all comments, good, bad or ugly. I'm generally curious as to how much more I should be concerned about (pre)mastering. I didn't have a ton of time to finish these (the album) but am open to points I should address in the future, compared to this song.
Thanks for any input, and the song's in my music profile.

Feb 21, 2008 07:33 pm Are there 2 guitar parts?
The one that is eqed higher in the spectrum could come down a tad bit in volume and get pushed back a bit (reverb?) in my opinion.
I'm having trouble hearing with my right ear lately, so I think that's playing in to it. But one of the guitars is a little harsh to me (too much highs...). I don't know, do I even sound like I know what I'm talking about?
Oh, regardless, I like the song!

Feb 21, 2008 10:15 pm Not to derail this thread, but Coolo man, 'hope the hearing-issue clears up . Have you seen a doctor ?... is there pain ? That kind'a **** scares the hell out of me when I hear it coming from someone involved in audio .
PJK: The mix sounds pretty darn good here... especially the vocal recording/mixing... nice sterio-play going on there . Instruments sound killer, as well . Catchy 'lil number, too... gon'na be stuck in my head all night now !(good thing)

Feb 22, 2008 03:08 am Hue, I appreciate the concern, but I had the same issue with my left ear about 2 years ago (only worse, it was painful...). But basically, and this is a tad embarrasing, its literally too much wax in my ear. It's a ***** to get out, so I'm avoiding it... but it's not all that serious...

Feb 22, 2008 08:56 am Cool . Glad it's not serious . I had an similar issue when I was younger . Spooky stuff . I've since adopted a daily ear-cleaning 'regimine', if you will . It would completely freak me out if I were to go through that these days . Good luck with it .
heh
I thought it might be from those gangstas hangin' out in your studio, poppin' caps in the peeps that blow the rap . ; )

Feb 23, 2008 01:53 am Mix sounds real nice to me, the acoustic has a nice warm tone to it and the mando is sounding good as well, bass sounds about right level wise for an acoustic song, vocals are right there, I think you've done a great job with it. Some nice pickin' as well, cool song.

Feb 23, 2008 12:37 pm Thanks guys, this one turned out the best, i think. the others on the disk are less developed, so to speak. no lyrics, or flubbed parts, or less-than-stellar recording technique =0.
There are 2 sets of each guitar and mando, recorded at the same time. I panned the 2 guit around, and also the 2 mandos. I also did the same with the girl voices.
At times I think the bass is low, and agree the highs may be too much, but the artist is a real 'high-end' nut, so it was more to his liking. Others have told me to bring up the bass on other songs on this disk, but I think this one hits fairly well.
thanks for the input.
Feb 23, 2008 07:48 pm P, this is a fine job. Good pickin, pro mix and production. Sounds as good as any motherfolkin' tune I've heard. I downloaded it.
Thumbs skyward.

Feb 26, 2008 09:34 pm Very seet picking and Mando on this. I love it. I agree that the mix sounds very good. I don't hear anything I would change on this at all.
Feb 27, 2008 01:16 pm I like the rich acoustic sounds. You did a nice job on this track for sure!
Right on!

Feb 27, 2008 01:59 pm Thanks guys, appreciate the props. I did the engineering, etc. but only played bass after they tracked.

Feb 28, 2008 10:21 am Hey, Thanks Kaos, how's your studio going?
Mine's been on quite a pause, with a wedding last year, and more work this year.

Mar 03, 2008 05:55 am Thats cool. reminds me a bit of the Lovemongers version of Battle of Evermore, thats probably just the mandolins though. That sort of music's really noy my cup of tea but you've still made it sound good.

Mar 08, 2008 12:25 pm Hey this is great! Love the mandolin and guitar parts, they're expertly played and the arrangement is terrific.
Production is really solid. The lead vocals seem a little dry or something, I'm not sure how to put my finger on it. I don't think reverb would be the solution, or maybe so...its not a song that demands drenched vocals or anything. The background vocals sound awesome. Not only the performance but they're EQd and compressed just right. They sit perfectly in the mix.
Nice bass playing too :)

Mar 08, 2008 04:10 pm Thanks, Tadpui.
That was one of the areas I wish I could have spent more time; the lead vocals. I putzed around with them for a week or so, changing, doing this, then that, and finally just resigned to having it as it is. That may be the one that I didn't put anything on the lead vocal, as everything I tried sounded artificial. I'd have to go look, but I think they are dry.
I'm thinking that's were hardware or very hi-$$$ effects come into play. I hear delicious reverb on some pro stuff, and think "how'd they do that?" Christine Aguilera comes to mind, on Beautiful. The reverb on her voice is just divine, but I couldn't seem to duplicate it with the tools I have =(.
The girl's tracks were much more fun, as I could doctor those up and they still sounded good. =)
