Phonic Firefly 302 problem, can't recieve any audio signal

Having some trouble getting any audio levels into garageband from my PF 302 firewire interface. The computer is an I-Mac running 10.4.10.
I went into the Utilities folder then to Audio/Midi and changed the Inputs to the Firefly 302 but it won't let me change the volume input on the individual channels. They are faded out and I can't access them, what gives? Is this why I can't get any audio in from the mic?
I have signal on the input indicator lights on the Firefly and when I changed the output to the Firefly I could see the metronome reading on the firefly's indicator output lights so I know the computer and firefly are talking to each other.
Is there some setting I'm missing somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
