does cubase se3 have a built in compressor? i cant seem to find it!

Yes it does. Its under Dynamics in the list of VST effects. I think that it's combined with an noise gate and a limiter, but there's a compressor function on there as well.

There's tons of free ones too if you look around. KVR Audio is a great resource for free VST effects and instruments:
