Man, I really dig the tone on your guitars alot.

I am listening on pc speakers at work so comment on the lower end of things, my only issue right off was a semi-weak sounding snare. The crack is present but it seems to be missing some body.

Really good song though, well written and I would really like to hear vox.

Oh btw, what did you record the guitars\bass with, they have great tone and seem to work well together.

Thanks. :) I wanted to record the snare on a separate track, but I didn't have room on my interface.(2 inputs-1kick 1-mixer[snare, overheads]) For the guitars, I miked the amp with two mics, MXL 991 condenser, and an audio technica condenser mic that I used for the overhead on my drumkit. I ran the MXL 991 through my TUBEPre and into the mixer and ran them both to my interface. I pretty much just put the two mics close to the speaker of the amp, one in the bottom left and the other slightly above. For the bass I used my Audio Technica Digital Reference kick mic and mikedmy friends bass amp that he happened to leave in my garage(lucky me) on the bottom left of the speaker as well.

Really a nicely balanced mix. Everything blends and yet stands alone. Nice job.

Well color me suprised, very nice work on the guitars and bass then, I recently read some things on close micing a guitar amp with an LDC. Now that I have the Vox with controllable output wattage (same tube tone, less volume) I feel safe sticking my K2 in front of it. On the snare, that makes total sense now, a very nice capture for using only two mics, bravo.

Once again, let's hear some vox :)

Just a thought on your drum mix. Maybe take that overhead track and insert another copy that is EQ'd for more mid range (maybe roll off the highs too so you don't get too much shimmer), might bring more body out of your toms and snare.

Thanks for the comments to everybody. And for Cpt...I will do that later tonight, it sounds like an awesome idea for snare. I wish I could tell you more about the guitars, but I am not the best guitar player :P, but thats pretty much how I miked the amp.

I gotta agree, very raw sounding. Yet you can hear it all and tell what it is. I as well like the bass sound you got, it fits well with the guitars. And indeed a good capture on the drums with the sparse set up. Nicely done there as well. I liked the tune and agree I'd like to hear vocals with this one. Its something I would crank up for sure.

What can I do if I wanted one snare track, one kick track, and one overhead track?

I think you might try putting the kick and overhead on one track, making sure the kick is present and good sounding before recording it. Then put the snare on its own separate track. This will make sure you can get the snare sounding good without effecting the rest of the drum sound.

Hey lakejunkie, I like the "garagey" -it's a word now- sound in some contexts, and I think it fits this one. Not to say that it can't be improved, but there is something to say for the swashbuckling effect. Keep rockin'.

And it looks like dB got the direct link to the songs workin'. Nice.

garagey.... by george your right!! I love matching songs to a certain recording style. Papa joe's for example screamed for low definition and I think benefitted from it.

Oh and herb, I get a solid chuckle everytime I see your avatar. Never change it!! ;)

I really like it. I like raw/live sounding stuff. Add some scratch vocals and you are onto a right winner there. Sounds like it could have been recorded live in a pub or night club.

Thats exactly my sort of thing that.
