Pretty dull game over all, pretty lame commercial too...the only one I liked so far was the wheel invention...

The half time show was pretty decent, makes me wanna get tickets to see Tom Petty when he comes here with Steve Winwood...

I love Tom Petty! Is he going to be in The Cities?

That was the highlight of the game so far, although it is starting to get interesting.

Well I won $200 on the score from 1st and 2nd qtr:

It was an exciting game, problem was that I didn't really care who won.

I thought Tom Petty was old and boring (and safe) which is exactly what the NFL wanted.

The screaming squirrel got the most laughs here, I can barely remember any other commercials.

EDIT: Actually I remember Big Ben singing, that was funny :)

That was an incredible eight minutes of football! The first three-and-a-half quarters were boring, but WOW, what a finish!

And a new episode of "House" to boot! Life is good!

Oh, Target center, screw that then, I thought it was at the Xcel.

That Ben R commercial was terrible, nice try, but not funny I didn't think...

The 4th quarter of the game was good, otherwise I thought it was boring, however, I do have to take my hat off to the Giants defense, they were unstoppable...absolutely unbelievable, almost as unbelievable as Eli Manning getting the MVP...what a joke that was.

He did play a great game though, I have to say that...but so did loads of others, how about Tyree?

Still great game all around by the Giants, the stars aligned and we can sit and hear about the ****** '72 Dolphins for another year.

Tom Petty did a perfect super bowl, just hits, no ad-libbed guitar solos or anything, just right off the CD, but it sounded decent (tends to while playing to a recording)...I thought it was one of the better shows. Thank God for no wardrobe malfunctions...

I didn't stay up for House, it looked like a great episode but the postgame put me to sleep, literally.

about the big ben idol commercial:

not a great commercial, but i was surprised that ben acted it as about as well as you could hope. the director got out of him the emotions he wanted for such a simple commercial. blame the writers. oh come on, just start liking this excellent guy.

ben's an idol fan, i believe. he's talked about it before. last summer in pittsburgh, i was sitting in the fox and hound when in walks big ben. it was 'pittsburgh idol' night, so there was a singing competition going on and it was crowded. he came in with a posse of security people. he lives in my hometown, the pitt suburb i come from, so this is normal. my sister has met him too, and the bars he frequents are common knowledge. anyway, he sat down at a table but kept going up to a glass window inside the bar to watch certain singers. he was into it, having a lot of fun. so on another level i found the commercial kind of funny. because maybe he actually fancies himself an idol contestant on some level? hopefully more commercials to come...

running down a dream is a great song. all in all, petty struck me as worn out, or out of time, though. from some former time. but i do like that song, and i like tom and always will.

eli manning was the MVP, no two ways about it. take off your preconception shades. the guy was excellent all day long. tyree caught THE ball, but eli had to make it happen. the great escape was the moment that heart triumphed over the machine. eli as the MVP is the objectively correct vote.

The e-trade was funny, the Will Ferrell commercial was funny and the invention of the wheel was funny, otherwise they sucked...Shaq as a jockey was mildly humorous...

As Far as MVP, no shades on at all, the DEFENSE won that game, not Eli or the offense.

the commercials basically sucked this year. the baby vomiting was just EMBARASSING. as if the company had just got on some bandwagon and lost all common sense completely. right? there were those studies last year where people got into MRIs and the commercials were run, and you could see fear centers lighting up, or pleasure centers failing to. i guarantee that baby commercial had the exact wrong effect on people.

idiots.

the defense was spectacular, but eli made nary a wrong throw. even his interception was the receiver's fault. he was great. he overcame himself in the postseason and is now an accurate QB.

great dude sorry you dont see it

I see it, he had a phenominal post season, and hats off to him, you are right, the pick wasn't his fault, a slightly off throw, but the receiver should have caught it...but still, the DEFENSE won that game, NOBODY has held the Pats offense to that little...they would have NEVER won if the defense didn't play as good as they did.

Feb 04, 2008 08:40 am

yeah the defense made it possible. i thought the giants had a chance because i realized they were a real team, a full team. the defense was the difference maker. but the defense doesn't get mvp.

you gotta admit that that escape of manning's was like an injection of human willpower. it looked like it. it felt like he just wasnt gonna let it end there. it was the moment when heart beat the machine, in a 'rocky' way. or, it looks that way on film, and that is what it probably means to many pats haters. it was pretty much the exact moment i've been wishing for for months. i clapped so hard my hands got red.

Feb 04, 2008 08:42 am

haha but man, i love that helmet catch.

i just think eli's the obvious choice. to not give mvp to him is somehow wrong. he overcame a lot, you know. not just the game but himself. something in his mind.

Feb 04, 2008 08:44 am

That one escape from an almost inescapable sack, and quick throw was a spectacular play, no doubt about it.

I dunno how many times I have to say he played well before you'll shut up about it, he played great, the whole post season, but he DID NOT deserve the MVP.

But, he's the QB so everybody thinks he needs it...always the way it works...

Member

Feb 04, 2008 08:54 am

but who did? tyree? he played great, but i don't know him. i saw a few important catches there, but i only really remember two.

hines ward did not deserve MVP in the steelers SB win. no one did, though.

i hear ya, i just think eli's the deciding factor. a strong defense without an offense that can put points up is doomed. he's the one who grew and changed, and he's the motor of the offense, and he was accurate, and because he overcame all that ****, the offense was potent enough to win. i mean, i he completed a lot of passes perfectly, very accurately.

They didn't have much better of an offense, they had ENOUGH to win...the Defense won the game by stopping a virtually unstoppable offense, period, end of story.

db, i dunno, i think you're blinded by brady. the pats offense has been superhuman all year, but plax is great, and eli was DEAD ACCURATE all night, so what more do you want?

you're right that the defense won GAME ONE, but the offense won GAME TWO by playing pretty well. football is three games in one.

You're right, I disagree with you so I must be blind...

Plax is great, so why didn't he get MVP...

Get over it, the Giants played a great game, Eli played no better (or worse) than the rest of the team, the star aligned, Eli being put up on the MVP pedestal is laughable though.

lol

nuh uh

plax didnt get mvp cuz he...well actually he could have...

eli played well though. why won't you see that? you just seem to hate the guy. i did too until the postseason. i only ever rooted for eli when he played well. when he sucked i wanted him to lose. he kind of had to earn it, and who knows if itll even stick. i'm not annointing him, just giving cred where cred is due.

Ummmmm, I counted three times in this thread I said he played great...why won't you see that? I don't hate the guy, I just don't think he's that great of a QB, but did have a great post season this year (four times, now).

I just called my dad for yucks to see what his opinion was, he said pretty much what I did, when there is no clear, standout super star, the QB gets it.

That's what happened yesterday. They all played well, that's why they won, they were a complete team, everybody did their job, so, by default, the QB gets the MVP.

Probably one of the best receptions of all time, not the "catch" so much as the hanging on to the ball afterwards...if anyone remembers this play, Tyree is something, man...

Not that Manning didn't throw a great pass, yada yada yada...

In 42 Super Bowls, only 8 times has a defensive player won the MVP.

It's the nature of the beast...offensive skills players get all of the glory...and, I suppose, most of the blame when things go wrong.

Manning played well yesterday, but there's no question that the defense won the game by holding the Pats to their lowest point total of the year. But the defense played well as a unit...no way to pick just one standout. They all played a great game. So...give the trophy to the guy that led the team down the field for the winning score. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying (again) it's the nature of the beast.

My experience has been that the Target Center is bearable if you can be on the main floor about halfway back. Anyplace else in the hall, the sound is unintelligible. Xcel Center has great sound everywhere I've ever sat.

Last time I saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was in 1986 when he was touring with Bob Dylan. That was at The Metrodome. Talk about suck-*** sound!

Tony...it sounds like you don't care for Tom Petty. What could you possibly have against him? I really enjoyed his halftime show. Great band, great choice of songs. (But, then again, I'm old and boring too.)

I saw the Stones twice on their Bridges to Babylon Tour, once at Soldier Field and once at the Dome...the dome SUCKS!

I have seen a few good shows at the Target Center, everything from Elton John to Motley Crew...I don't like the sound of the room, it's OK, better than the dome, but it's so boomy...the Xcel is wonderful...

2 cents.

Pats got what they deserved. I know they blew past all the cheating controversy at the outset of the season, but this is poetry. Karma.

18 and 1 gets you nothing.
No place in the record books.

Tyree was amazing in the last drive, and I was amazed that Shockey wasn't really missed!

I thought the Giants defense were going to all get injured on the last Pats drive to the end zone.
Great coverage on Moss, though.

Adverts that got my attention (didn't watch everything as we're getting ready for a kitchen remodel):

They hit the record books plenty this season!

The more I think about it tho, it was cool watching a defense step up THAT much, I mean wow...they shut down the most potent offense in the league.

I am bummed I didn't see an undefeated season, but I did see the upset of the century...and that's cool too.

The Pats also have a high draft pick this year, they aren't gone by any means...

I'm not taking away from the records they set this season. Great stuff.

My biggest problem was the way the league just slapped their wrists for the cheating thing. They should have been banned from post season play. To my mind justice was served. It makes my blood boil to think of the teams who lost by one score the previous season (Steelers included) who might have otherwise won.

Oh, yeah. I love defenses who step up like that. That's what makes me love the game so much.

I'm sure the Pats will be back. I look forward to next season, it will be a good one.

Slapped wrist? Didn't the coach get fined half a million bucks?

I gotta say something about Bilechik's sweat shirt last night too, but can't come up with much, nice, brand new shirt, hacked off at the elbows just like all season...how does the NFL allow that? They control everything about attire on the sidelines, Randy Moss was fined in Minnesota for wearing the wrong baseball cap once...

I'm loving the fact that the Pats lost. Excellent (mr. burns style...). I can't get over that one play, with the helmet catch, and manning getting away from two defenders. I missed most of the commercials, and the entire 2nd quarter, but it sounds like i didn't miss much. I liked the fire breathing commercial. The danicka patrick one didn't make any sense...actually a lot of the commercials that i saw didn't make any sense. Oh well, superbowl is the king event of overhype. It's crazy when i'm hanging out with people who could give a **** about football, and are asking me what I'm doing for the superbowl...

Oh yeah, and I liked the doritos crash the super bowl song as well. girl is cute and can sing...

I kinda like Tom Petty, I have a few albums and I've seen him, he just looked terribly old and played it terribly safe. Even the Stones from a year or two back showed more life. Tired is about the best description.

I say 5/10 Manning is called "in the grasp" on that escape play.

Defense played well but you can't make "THE DEFENSE" MVP and no one player stood out above the others. No way was Burress the MVP, he did nothing until the end.

Post game show watching Manning and Burress practicing that pass was cool.

I don't understand anyone calling the game boring. It had me engaged start to finish, not high scoring but kind of like a tight baseball game where you knew the FG v TD might make all the difference.

I loved the Timberlake ad and the one with the screaming squirrel.

sorry had to sleep. db maybe i was focused on one aspect of your argument because of beers.

i see the manning mvp as justified because at times the NY offense was its own kind of defense. that opening drive lasted ten minutes and it wasn't the only long giants drive. keep brady off the field and you stand a chance of winning. manning did that. so i'm cool with it. if an entire defense was eligible for mvp, though, then i would have given it to the entire defense. i don't think it makes sense to give it to one defensive guy here, though, and not to tyree or burress, because what eli had to do (including the long drives, and not making any mistakes) trumps that, to me. it just makes sense. any other outcome would not have made logical sense to me.

I haven't talked on single person today outside this thread that thinks Eli deserved MVP status...admittedly, most of them couldn't say who did, but felt he didn't.

Well watching the highlights today Manning made a number of KEY plays. The escape, the two touchdowns, and one 3rd down where he was tripped but still got the throw away for a 30 or so yard game.

I just can't imagine who else you could have given it to except perhaps Jason Tuck.

The same people I talk to every day at work, reporters, videographers, a couple sports columnists, then outside work my dad, a couple neighbors some miscellaneous friends...one was even from New York and stoked about the win...one was a Packer fan and bitter as hell...

One person thought he deserved it, actually, and she said because she thinks he's cute.

Why, you want to sit and tell me every one of them has blinders on too? It's a subjective judgment call at best. He got it because he is the quarterback and nobody else jumped out as a superhero...so he got it by default, let it go already.

You hit the nail on the head. He was the most deserving player in a hard to pick award. You have to watch the highlights to see the major plays he made though, they were kind of spread out.

It's interesting you can find all these people yet I can't find one who says there was any other choice. This includes pretty much all the major sportswriters on the net. Again, no one saying he was runaway best but just that he was the most deserving from a pretty even bunch.

Just saying what idle chatter around the water cooler, and leaning on our snow shovel's in the hood...and like me, nobody was trashing Eli, he made some key clutch plays and played well in general, just saying the defense had a bigger roll in winning than the offense did...obviously, offense puts points on the board, and that is what wins, but any defense that can shut down the Brady/Moss train is OK in my book...

The problem is, like somebody said earlier in the thread, you can not give the MVP to the defense as a whole.
