I'm planning on buying a pair of Fostex PM-1 MKII Nearfield Active Studio Monitors for my mixing needs.

Does anyone own a pair, or do people have a strong opinion on these?

I'm just looking for a nice pair where I know what I'm putting in (frequency wise) I 'm getting out.

Thanks guys. :)

I think anyone here would say, the best option would be find a place that sells 'em, and take your absolute favorite CD with you, and compare those monitors against others at the store. Your monitors are probably one of your most, if not -the- most important part of your setup, since they're something like wearing reading glasses, only for your ears.

If you don't have an option to give them a listen locally, then I'd say do some serious researching. And track down as many opinions (good and bad) as you can. It looks like those particular monitors retail about $380 USD for a pair, so look at similar monitors in that price range.

Here's an SOS article on the -original PM1 monitors- NOTE!: this is NOT the MKII monitor. But might be similar.

www.soundonsound.com/sos/...s/fostexpm1.htm

I haven't heard much on the Fostex monitors, but they're probably not that bad, and look comparable to my own tannoys, at least in general specs. At least I haven't seen any ravingly horrible reviews on them. I haven't seen a graph for them, but graphs tend to lie a bit anyways.

Some other brands/models to look up as well:

Tannoy Reveal series
KRK (RP6 Rokits are worth a look)
Samson Resolv (I think dB touted the 65a's awhile back)
Event 20/20
M-Audio BX series
Alesis M1

And that's all I can remember off the top of my head for the 350-400 price range. Sometimes you can find them cheaper, or on zzounds/sweetwater/etc. blowouts.

I can tell you I like my tannoy reveal 6's (passives) and I found a pair on e-bay for 375 back in '06, and they work well for me, but then again, that's me.

Ya know, I've been looking at buying a pair of Fostex PM0.4 monitors for a little while, but can't find anywhere local who sells anything worth buying, let alone these monitors. A buddy of mine however has a set of the PM1's your mentioning and I've gotta say that for the price range, they're not up to snuff. If I were you, I'd go with either a pair of KRK's, the Samson Reosolv's, and the Event 20/20s are KILLER bang for buck, but you'd really have to be an audiophile to tell the difference. If you're looking to go high end, then I'd say you can go wrong spending a good 500$ a speaker on Adam Audio's 'entry level' A7 monitors. Then again, here's to dreaming, lol.

Fostex has always been a pretty solid brand in my mind, but I'm not sure their monitors carry the fidelity as their other products without spending at least a G$. So I'd say go with KRK or Event. Those two brands have never let me down. (I know I'm in for some lip on this because of previous posts about KRK, but they're seriously solid monitors.) Plus, all my personally owned KRKs were used in untreated rooms, which no doubt added to the bass issues.
