Odd little problem

Finally made some time to start recording again and i've come up against an odd little problem.

I've got my mic going into the mic jack on the soundcard, I haven't got a UX2 yet. And for some reason the signal I am getting in Cool Edit is coming through in Mono. I'm getting left only. Any ideas?

yeah, it's been discussed in the forum a few dozen times...you are sending a mono cable to a stereo input most likely.

In reaper, you can tell the program that you want to record a mono track, or a stereo track. Maybe you've set it to stereo, when it should be looking for a mono track.

Mono coming in is OK, since you're sending in a mono signal.

Stereo source would be like a keyboard, drum machine, or guitar processor. These all have a stereo field, so it's good to capture it as such. The other input types (voice, guitar - even separate mics, bass, drum mics) work fine in mono.

When you play it back, the program sends signal to both L & R outputs. This is where the PAN adjustment applies.

Cheers. I just have to find a way of telling Cool Edit I am recording in Mono. Never used to be a problem with Version2, and Version 2.1 didn't appear that different till I encountered this.

Cant work out how the bloody hell to get cool edit to get a get a mono signal now. If anyone has any experience of this with cool edit, great. If not, dont worry I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

When starting a new session, a dialog box pops up when you hit record. This is where you set sample rate, number of channels, and bit resolution.

Unfortunately my dialouge box is only showing sample rate. Not no. of channels and bit res.

I'm starting to wish I'd stayed with V2. I've always hated upgrades.

Basically in the status bar at the bottom of the screen it says:

44100 32-bit and thats all.
in the help file the screen shot says.

44100 32-bit Stereo.

Edit1: My cool edit appears to be utterly knackered for some reason. At this rate I'm never going to get back into it!

I'm so annoyed by this. I really managed to set aside a whole bloody evening tonight to sort this out and get some ideas recorded that I have been writing over the last couple of months.

Edit2: I've uninstalled everything. Reistalled CEP V2 and now I still haven't got the appropriate option. Aggghhhh.

The program is set up to record sterio, and y'a got a mono signal going into it . Don't blame the program for not being able to record something it doesn't know exists . Get a sterio cable . Also, y'a may want to work in 16/44.1 until y'a get the UX2... onboard SCs don't like being pushed .

I've used it before recording mono. it shouldn't be a problem switching between the two. The option to switch between then mysteriously is now missing.
I used to use it in exactly the same way as I am using it now.

CEP leaves remnants of itself after you uninstall it. Remove it again, but this time, before you reinstall, get rid of the leftovers.

First, delete all remaining CEP folders in Program Files or wherever you installed it. If that doesn't work:

Use a registry cleaner,www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html or you can run regedit and delete the related entries manually under HKEY LOCAL MACHINE. Be careful in there.

As a last resort, you can revert to a previous restore point, but if you follow the above instructions, you shouldn't have to.

I've re-installed it, then tried again afte getting rid of the remnants by going into program files and deleting the directory, there appeared to be a .dll file missing for some reason but I found that on the net and added it. first I tried adding it but it didn't make any difference so next time after I had uninstalled everything, I created a coolpro2 directory in program files in advance of installing the program and dumped the dll in there. This appeared to cure the .dll error but didn't fix the above little problem.

A mate of mine has cool edit too so I might borrow his and see if his copy installs OK. Could it be something to do with Windows Vista. Last time I was running cool edit I was running it on Win98.

I'm just getting really frustrated now 'cos I have been really missing recording and I just want to get on with it. I've got loads of stuff I have written out in notepads, and I want to re-record some of the stuff I lost when my Win98 machine died.

I've seen things like this happen when I install 2 different printer drivers for the same printer.

For example: print driver A works really well when printing via IP, whereas print driver B works really well when printing via parallel cable.

Now, when using print driver A, there are some features not accessible compared to print driver B, and vice versa.

My point in all this, is that maybe you have installed a new driver for your sound card? If you did, then maybe reverting back to the earlier version of that soundcard driver may put back your options.

This may not be an issue of CEP, but instead the hardware driver for the soundcard.

Hope that made sense =).

Ahhh... VISTA! That OS has known issues with audio software.

That may explain it right there.

That kinda makes my assumption feasible. Vista drivers certainly won't be the same drivers as win98. You may never get the functionality back (may, i don't really know).

You should give reaper a whack, tis free to try, and works a treat for me.

(just saying . . .)

Hmmm, trying a different approach, on the track you have armed for recording, click on the "In" button. It should open up a window. Select left channel (instead of stereo or whatever it says), and you should be good to go...

or have you already done this....

oh and selecting same for all tracks option is also a time saver. ahem.

Yeah I think its time to ditch CEP and get some software from this century :D

There is so much good software out there, and most of it comes in a demo form. So you should be able to try before you buy.

Vista does introduce a wrinkle just because the driver and app support for it is so thin and sketchy so far.

Man, I have not used CE in awhile, but I specifically remember being able to select sample rate, bit depth, stereo\mono etc..

Is there something under the file menu called session properties or the likes?

There should also be something like this which sets your default session properties. Perhaps in 2.1 it uses all defaults yet lets you specify different sample\bit settings.

I found that in an article about CEP 2.1 here..
www.softpedia.com/progScr...nshot-2076.html

Also, if you are going to upgrade and plan on actually spending some money. Adobe bought Cool Edit years back and it is now called Audition, it is at 3.0 and has Vista 32bit support and also will utilize multi core CPU's. I only mention this because the transition from one to the other for me was really easy.

Not a hardware issue... my bad . : /

I wish M-Audio would get off their buts, and get past the beta version of their 64bit Delta drivers . THAT would make me go Vista .
