More just to chat about peoples preferances this one really and maybe get some ideas.

Most of use particularly with heavy rock probably do a fair bit of double tracking of the rhythm to beef it up!

What positions to you put the guitars at? I tend to put one guitar 35-45 left and the other 35-45 right. I never use more than too.

Also do you prefer to let one of them drop out for the guitar solo to make it sound more live

yeah, I usually pan then like you do, EQ them slightly differently...sometimes the "brighter" EQ'd track I will drop out, or lower the volume of during solos.

I never bother EQing on the computer.

I know I go on about it but I just get the tone I want from the amp. I do often use two different guitars though. Usually keep the washburn doing rhythm and use the Ibanez on the solos

Well, there is a singificant sdiffernece between the tone that makes the guitar sound best and the tone that makes the mix sound best...I EQ for the mix on the computer...has nothing to do with the instrument.

I'll do a bit of fiddling and see how I feel with it. I do like to keep fiddling to a minimum though.

most people like to keep it to a minimum, but if you want a mix to sound decent, sometimes it takes a lot...when mixing you have to forget your a guitarist, bassists, drummer or whatever and put your producer hat on and do whats best for the whole song...you have to EQ the guitar to let the bass shine in a section of the frequency range, bass has to be scooped out for the kick and snare, etc...

What I've been doing lately is do the doubled tracks with different guitar tones in the first place. I'm hoping that this will eliminate some of the EQ work on the computer.

On my current project I use the neck pickup, less mids on the amp, and kick on my compressor/sustainer pedal for a very smooth distortion. Then on the other track I use the bridge pickup, more mids, and less distortion for more articulation and presence. When panned, I've been very happy with the results.

Uh, at least one more time . . .

If I'm having trouble deciding where to put something, I listen to music recorded in a way that I like--on phones and in the car. With headphones, you can hear how things are placed in a mix, and more readily decide where to put the same elements in your mix. What did the mixer/producer do on tracks that you really like, or admire?
