I thought my dog was toast...

Beautiful weekend...so all us guys in the hood were out letting our dogs burn off winter energy from being couped up for weeks. Throwing tennis balls, letting them chase each other, yada yada yada...we are having beers, catching up on family drama for each other and whatnot...

Three dogs, my 75 pound black lab/german shepherd, my neighbors 100 pound bloodhound/german shepherd and another neighbors 50-55 pound mutt of some sort (looks like the black and white dog from the Little Rascals) all come barreling around a house, Sadie (my dog) hits some packed, slick snow and goes sliding right into a tree that is about 6-8 inches around and lets out a whine, she falls over while the other two dogs "play" with her and she is whining, we run and clear the dogs...she just lays their wheezing and whining...

I grab her back legs and move them slowly, no tweaking, twitching or screaming, that's good, pat her side, roll her over, no scream, good, pat her other side...all looks good but she won't stop wheezing...

She lays there for a few minutes, we are all freaking out...

after a few minutes she gets back and up starts running again...turns out she must have just knocked the wind out of herself.

WHEW! What a scare!

Glad she's apparently OK. Dogs can be amazingly resilient.

Our border collie is 14, and a cool old man. We're braced for the possibility of coming home one afternoon and finding him gone. So we're enjoying him while we can.

Yeah, Sadie is only 1 1/2 or 2 now, still young and energetic...but actually, my wife doesn't appreciate how calm and easy the dog is for her age, she just see's her as a big dog that sheds a lot, but seeing other people's dogs she is beginning to understand what an amazingly good dog we have.

I suspect her ribs will be a bit tender today, she took a hell of a shot, but she was up and outside with me this morning, and didn't have any apparent limp or breathing pain or anything...

oo-boy, getting the wind knocked out of you is a real experience.

I remember my first one. I thought for sure I was dieing, and couldn't figure out why nobody was doing anything. They just stood around watching.

Glad she's OK.

I told the story before on this forum, but I assure you that slamming into one of these is not a happy sensation:

I'm convinced that cats and small children are composed of 90% rubber.

Of course they are republicans. What else would they be?

The Brave and the Innocent...
It always chokes me up to hear/see any animal, especially dogs, get hurt in anyway. They are so innocent and depend entirely on us for their safety. BUT, you gotta let 'em be a dog and fesces occurs.
Glad to hear your Sadie's doin' OK dB.

Cats were once considered gods by the Egyptians, and they never let you forget it.

On the whole, I don't like cats for the exact reason glnflwrs points out. Cat's don't live with you, they "allow you to live with them"...They just have an attiutude I never have really dug much. Years and years ago I had a Calico Manx that was a great cat, to date, the only great cat I have ever known.

forty, interesting, the other day I decided democrats were dogs. :-D

Dogs have masters. Cats have staff.

Glad she's OK dB. That woulda sucked if she had benn hurt badly.

But I am guessing the whining and weezing was due to fright and getting the wind knocked out. A dog probably doesn't have a clue what happened. They just know something is wrong.

"forty, interesting, the other day I decided democrats were dogs. :-D"

haha, you can think what you want about democrats, but i hope you agree that dogs--the animals--would vote republican if they could. i have it all worked out, issue by issue, an entire argument, which i'd rather not get into too much. i just hope people here can see it.

sure, I agree, dogs are the working class pet, cats would vote democrat, or, even worse, be democratic nominees.

maybe we dipped the same trip this weekend :-D

i'll just mention one or two issues here.

a stranger comes to the house, the dog defends home and family. the cat either runs at the first sign of danger or goes up and rubs against its leg.

also, clearly dogs are for open gun laws. they gotta get out and there and chase down shot ducks.

Haha, not some dogs I know, they would probably just sniff your butt while climbing through the window.

But yeah, if getting a cat for home protection, that is your fault :)
