beginner equipment suggestions....

I'm just a newbie as far as recording goes, and was trying to find a good deal to get me started. I can spend about $200 on equipment. I already have a PC, but it has lousy onboard sound. I also have a entry level Audio-Technica DR-VX2 dynamic mic. I would like to record some vocals and acoustic guitar. I've already downloaded Kristal and done a bit of recording running my mic through a small guitar amp, and then into the line in on my motherboard, but this just isn't going to cut it.
Any ideas on how to get the best bang for my buck equipment-wise? I found a Lexicon Lambda on Ebay for about $133.00 shipped. Should I grab this and a Condenser mic? Suggestions anyone?

I suggest the Line6 Toneport. Get the UX2 if you can afford it, UX1 if not.

A well reviewed low cost mic

$130 for the Toneport UX1 (Stretch to the UX2 if you can)

You're good to go. Line6 Toneport comes with tons of guitar, bass, preamp and effects modeling.

Here's one for cheap (so far):

Man, those reviewers sure liked that mic.

Get two of those, and you can record stereo acoustic, or acoustic and vocals simultaneously.

Cool guys, thanks for the links and input. Can you tell me though if the Line6 will power the mike, or will I have to get a separate amp or mixer....

And I did notice the almost worshipful reviews on that mic :) Makes me want to order a couple right now.

The UX2 will provide phantom power, i believe . . .

from MF site:

2 XLR mic inputs with +48V phantom power

Yep, it does.

Ahh groovy. Thanks. My dial-up is sooo slow, it takes forever to navigate for specs, prices, comparisons, ect. Much appeciated.

Anyone know anything about this card, btw?

ah yes, dialup is certainly an obstacle.

I've never heard of the card, and WOW, is it BIG!

That said, if it works, and you can get it on the real-cheap, then why not give it a try.

On a side note, for free/shareware, Reaper is a lot more capable than Kristal. Kristal has limitations, where Reaper does not.

I've been using it for over a year, and like it much.

Looking on the specs page for the Mixart 8 (which sells for about $1500.00 by the way) it shows that all the inputs are XLR. Would this make it difficult to use for my needs?

I don't think so. Plug your mic into one of the 4 mic inputs, and connect any line level instruments into one of the line inputs.

You may need a 1/4" to XLR converter for line devices, but those are easy to come by.

I don't know if that card provides phantom power, so you may need an external power supply for a condenser mic. The dynamic you have won't need phantom power.

Thanks for the info, guys. I ended up ordering the UX2. I think
I'm going to mess around with my dynamic mike at first and make sure I'm gonna use it enough to make it worth investing more moolah on condenser mics and whatnot. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions in no time....
