While Cleaning the Garage out....

I found a few old master tapes (4 track Fostex cassette) of some songs I'd forgotten all about and never finished (and likely won't <G>). Most of the old stuff I've posted has been off really worn out mixes on cassettes, these are a bit better since they are the original 4 track.

Any how if anybody's interested in listening here are a few I've remixed.

1) Are You Gonna Be Around (live.. almost)

A couple friends came over one night and We did this in one evening.

Rythm guitar & vocals: Me
Lead guitar: & backing vocals Richard G.
Drums: He was a friend of Richards and I'm afraid I can't remember what his name was, but He was pretty dang good. :) All recorded in 2 passes.

2) Can't Be The One:

Don't try to understand the lyrics cause there aren't any, it's just what was coming to me in my head while I played. This one is pretty rough, and didn't have a drum track so I did a quick track to add drums.

3) Monday Morning:

Another with unfinished lyrics but a little more worked out, this one I even started to redo, but I don't think I'm going to finish it.

4) Nowhere Man:

A 1/2 decent cover I think considering, took some cleaning up.

Thats it, there's more but I think these were the best of what was on the tapes.

I appreciate any listens & comments.

Thanks,

Dan

Man, I like the tone on the first two alot. I think "Can't be the one" has a cool ZZ Top feel to it.

Nowhere Man sounds pretty good, a little crispy on the hats but overall a good cover.

I really like are you gonna be around. It has a demo feel to it. But I really like the song.

Not quite as high on Can't Be The One. But its still a pretty nifty song. Good song.

I think Monday Morning would end up being a really good song if you were up for redoing it.

Are you gonna be around has some quality that I can't put my finger on....
I like the change into the chorus, which for some reason reminds me of The Jam. I'm sure that's not what you were trying for, but I love the melody there!

Can't be the one is pretty cool. There's an odd feel with the melody and the backing tracks. Seems like they 'collide' a little awkwardly, but in a cool way...
Do you know what I mean?
Do I know what I mean?

What is the meaning of this?!

Cool stuff.

Dude, I almost like this version of Are you Gonna be Around more then the newer one. It is killer, and I mean killer with a capitol K!

I'll agree with the ZZ Top reference on Can't be the One. Pretty interesting old school sound on that one, nice clear drums. And kind of a late Buffalo Springfield sound, moving into CSNY.

Monday Morning just has that groovy thing going for it, yet poppy sort of feel. Interesting guitar sound. Nice choice on the synthy drum sounds, they lend an alternative sound to it for that style of music.

Nowhere man, well I would like it no matter what. I think I have another version of this, or is it just a remixed version of this one? Either way, this is a cool version. Man do I simply love that guitar sound though. Makes me want to run out and buy a Rick just for that sound. And the harmonies are killer. I could listen to a ton of stuff like this.

Thanks CptTripps, I never thought about ZZTop but now that you mention it I can kinda hear influence, especially if the pinch harmonics in there weren't so wiped out on the tape from the 25 years of sitting in a box lol. It always brought Neil Youngs "Southern Man" kinda sound to my mind which I always liked.

I appreciate the listen & comments coolo! I do have pretty much everything done on a redo of Monday Morning except polishing up the lyrics and doing vocals, I just might try and finish it up. :)

TC, thanks man. We tried to do Are You Gonna Be Around as close to a live performance as we could just to see what it would sound like. The 2nd pass was just to redo vocals because they could barely be heard above everything else and add the bass since I was playing rythm guitar first time around. LOL I was surprised how well it came out considering the other guys had never heard the song before.

On Can Not Be I don't even know what I mean! LOL But yeah it's a bit of a strange one.

Thanks once again Noize! Yeah that version of AYGBA, brings back old memories, I need to look Richard up, haven't see Him since we did that, we were best friends growing up all through High School, then we just kinda drifted apart, funny how that goes.

I think I'm going to redo AYGBA again since the first time I did it I was just getting back into music & recording I'm sure I could do it quite a bit better now.

I agree on the reference to Buffalo SpringField & CSNY, little raunchier probably than what they did but I like raunchy sometimes. :)

Music's done MM, just need to motivate. <G>

On Nowhere Man this the only post I've made of it, didn't even remember doing it till I found these tapes. All you need for the guitar sound is an SG with lots of treble cranked into the amp, but a Rick sure would be nice or the double neck SG like Jimmy Page has, I'd love one of those. Then again changing 6 strings is bad enough. LOL

Thanks again to all!

I really like them too. They have a sort of early Blue Oyster Cult feel to them for me. Off subject, but I really like how you put the links to the tunes. How did you do that ? Is it a flash tool ?

Thanks for checking them out Bushmaster! When you enter a web link for the music the dB set it up to automatically use the flash player. It won't work with SoundClick links any more because they use their own player, and it also won't work with songs posted here until/if dB lets us directly link to our music here. :)

Thanks. I could post them on my personal site. That is really cool dB !! I hate 128 mp3's , I will give it a try some time with a 320 mp3 uploaded to my server. And yea, Id love to hear you do a cover of an old BOC tune. "Last Days Of May" would be sweet.

Any URL the ends in .mp3 will be converted to the flash play button.

I do have to automate the linking to profile songs one of these days...

Dan,

Finally got to listen to these. As you know, I'm a big fan and these do not disappoint! As you can imagine, I have nothing very constructive to add, but they are going on the iPod.

**EDIT: I just remembered that I can't download...I can only listen. That's good enough for me!

**EDIT TWO: I wish I had stuff like this just laying around in my garage. All I got are over-used snow shovels and dust-covered exercise equipment.

I wish I had a profile picture

Thanks a bunch Jim! I've added (at least temporarily) the tunes to my music profile here if you really want to grab them. You know nearly every song I've redone and posted was written/recorded in a 2 year period '81 & '82, I've been back at it now for nearly 5 YEARS (man I can't believe it's been that long already) and I've only done what 3 new songs? I wish instead of the one lying around in the garage, I was a prolific as I was back then. LOL

btw, You'll never guess whats on one of the tapes "Just the Girl For Me" in much better shape than that original mix I posted awhile back, I'm going to remix that one as well I think. :)

I surely do appreciate all the kind words you've given on my music over the last 4+ years!

I have moved a bunch of my older files over from some old 1 gig SparQ cartridges and there is pretty interesting stuff on there from when the boyz were both still very young. They would come in a plink around on the synths and stuff and I would just hit record and let them go. Started working with some of it and some turned out with good ideas. Some kind of sat stagnant for the last 12 years or so. I'm going to start redoing some of them as many use some of my older synths that no longer are here. But I am looking forward to replacing them with the software synths and samplers now at my disposal.

Ya, the majority of them are pretty rough, kind of just ideas played out. Not edited or filled out yet. But there are some finished ones.

There were also a ton of covers from my Musac days and music on hold work. Kind of funny to listen to them with simple GM instrumentation. I think I might bring some of those to life as well with proper instrumentation and see how they sound. Might be interesting.

Bushmaster, that actually might be in there as well. I haven't had time to look at every file, but there is a diverse mess of stuff for sure.

Cool. I have a Blue Oyster Cult dvd that came out a few years ago, and I really enjoy it. I love Bucks white swiss cheese looking guitar. I saw them in the late 70's early 80's, quite a few times.
