Jan 12, 2008 02:22 am Wow BH... I feel like we're getting really close. This is way too fast of a relationship for me.
On the real though, I'll be checking that out weekly. It'll be like I'm going to school on your dime! Thanks young, strapping step father, lol.

Jan 12, 2008 02:27 am It's really helpful for me to do this blog. It will make sure that I actually understand what I'm learning and that is what is important to me (besides being a step father of course).

Jan 12, 2008 02:52 am I think it's a great idea. This way, we get weekly progress reports, and like you said, you can make sure you retain all this stuff. And, you can use it as a reference if in the future you need to. I envy your courage my dear BH. It seems we've all underestimated you.

Jan 12, 2008 01:53 pm ... as long as I have readers, I will keep writing - lol. If anyone has any questions, just post in the comments area of the blog site and I will try and answer them or ask the teacher if I have to. Even more importantly, if I have misunderstood something, please correct me.

Jan 26, 2008 06:00 pm I think things like this should be mandatory for all students to do. It's a great way to see if you get it and will help you in remembering what has been taught. Great idea BH! That closet gives me an idea......

Feb 19, 2008 05:56 pm so you're using reaper in the class?
I think i've heard of ogg before, or was it something else. there's some sort of compression out there that is supposed to be lossless... can't remember what it it... anyways, good stuff.

We are using anything/everything we can get our hands on. So far we have looked at Roland, Pro Tools, Cubase, Sonar and Reaper.

We are just now getting to the bottom of this. Apparently it is more efficient than MP3. The instructor is looking into this and has said he will update us this Thursday.

Feb 19, 2008 09:48 pm I use FLAC for lossless compression when I need to shrink an audio file.
I also use OMF as well.
Although I like the OGG Vorbis it is still more like and mp3 compression then FLAC or OMF. But it appears to be pretty much lossless as well.
Everything you could possibly want to know about Vorbis is here on there site. It is an open source code and does work very well.

Feb 20, 2008 07:48 pm Ya, I've been using Vorbix for a while now. I found that awhile after I found FLAC and started using it as some people didn't trust FLAC at the time.

Apr 01, 2008 12:50 am Hey BH, whats with that '8 feet from the space between the kick and snare' OH micing? How'd it turn out?

Apr 01, 2008 11:21 am Hi CS, my instructor is a believer in using the overheads as the foundation for a great drum sound. His technique (the one shown in the blog) invloves placing the OH's on an angle rather than the typical side to side. This allows the kick and snare to appear in the center of the stereo image rather than the snare being slightly off center.
It sounded awesome! Now then, a couple of things to keep in mind. The overheads were AKG451's which are awesome mics and as you would have seen in the photo, the room is huge and professionally treated. Both of course have a huge impact on the sound.
I will be recording some bed tracks tomorrow night and I will be using this technique so I will be able to hear how well this technique will work in a less than ideal environment with less than ideal mics.
Apr 01, 2008 11:29 am BH! Thanks again. You just gained another reader! :)

Apr 01, 2008 02:49 pm Man, I can't imagine tracking in that large of a room! It must be treated nicely, I would be concerned about all kinds of funky reverb finding it's way onto the recording...
...my mind is tainted by only having ever recorded in my bedroom....

Apr 02, 2008 10:02 pm Yep, I'm still catching it when I can BH.
And ya, I've used the style of OH miccing for years. It works a charm in the right room. And even in some rooms that are not perfect.
I'm with you on the placement it gives the snare and kick.
Apr 03, 2008 04:54 am Dude, thats great. My main problem with rooms and OH's is a wayward center image. Keen to hear some sounds aye.
Did they give you any tips for rooms? I've tried an XY pointing towards the gap in the snare and kick and that worked pretty well, but not perfect.
I put down 451's in my letter to Santa last year, but I don't think he got it. ******* elves.
