Jan 09, 2008 05:55 am Well, basically you'll need recording Software, the four mics, and a(either firewire or USB) audio interface that can handle at least four simultaneous inputs. What kind of budget are you working with? You should know ahead of time that recording more than 2 signals at once gets a little pricey in terms of a good, solid audio interface, (300-600$) fair warning. Here's a link for an interface I'd suggest;
www.zzounds.com.../item--LINTPUX8
Now the four mics, you could use anything from 10$ radioshack mics to really expensive, over the top mics. But for an AWESOME set of CHEAP (79$ for 7) mics, I'd go with Karma. Here's a link for their drum package:
www.karmaaudio.com/sb7.html
Software, that's easy. You've got a Mac, so you can use Garage Band. If you'd rather use another program, there are tons of free recording softwares all over the web, and chances are you'll get an LE (light) version of either Ableton Live or Cubase with your audio interface.
Welcome to recording, and welcome to HRC by the way! :)
Jan 09, 2008 01:15 pm Thanks!, a few more questions.
Ok so i dont need a mixer and all of that other stuff?
Also their are these drum mics that come in a package (CAD), so i think i will use those.
I always thought i need a lot more stuff to do this, so all i need is mics, an interface, and a computer with software?
Also tell me about some of these free softwares on the web, assuming they might be better than garageband.
Thanks

Jan 09, 2008 01:23 pm Reaper for OSX is shareware, www.reaper.fm
I don't know if it's better than garageband, but I would think it's a big possibility.
* edit * it's still beta, and not quite finished, but it's in pretty close shape, I think * end edit *
To be honest, you need mics, preamps, interface, and computer w/ software. The preamp part can't be forgotten =).
Also, to make life easier, headphones, stands, cables, and reference monitors, for when you mix, would come in handy.
There may be other audio interfaces out there that'll give you 4 preamps, or maybe 8 on firewire (or maybe usb), the first ones I think of are the MOTU 8pre, and the presonus firepod (which some people really don't like).
The Line6 8ch thing will have processing, and modeling on each channel, I'd think, so that's a pretty good start.
I think Tascam makes a 8pre input FW device, but it may be more $$$ than the line6 device.

Jan 09, 2008 01:28 pm From Kristal website:
What about a MAC/Linux/... version?
Kristal 2 will be available for Windows and MacOS X.
Linux and other OS's are not planned yet.
