your hard drive may not be up to the task, like if the buffers get full, and can't hold anymore data, because the HD isn't keeping up.
try down-grading your tracking specs, like if you're at 96khz, drop to 48, or even 41. If you're at 24bit, try dropping to 16bit.
I'm not saying that this is the solution, but it may help point you to the problem, so you can work on it.

Thinking again, Dell likes to put lots of stuff on their machines, that runs in the background. Maybe killing a lot of un-needed processes will free up some resources and help you out too. This won't help if it's a HD issue, but it will help overall, by lowering CPU usage.
