Not to burst anybody's bubble but I have other opinions about those games. So many people buy that and press buttons on something that looks like a guitar to the music when they could have bought a cheap guitar and actually learned to play the guitar instead.

But if the game got you into indie bands then that's good. If you want to know any other good indie bands just ask me.

Yeah, I can see where one could feel that way, but still, learning a real instrument would be much harder and longer to do than learning a game, and, it's just fun, man...

Yeah life without fun would be very dull.

I just have friends that play instruments that waste their time doing that instead of actually playing the instruments more.

I myself used to play video games for fun too so I understand how fun they can be. Now I just play them on occasion.

Randal, you've got it totally backwards. This game makes people who had no interest in music want to learn instruments. Both of my kids are now begging for guitars and drums.

Plus, would you say we shoudln't play video games with shooting, just go and get guns ???

It's a game, don't forget that.

I will lay high odds very few will ever actually learn a real instrument based on the game.

However, I agree it's a game...don't take it so seriously...it's a game.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how do you play this game ? Do you, like, have to play/sing 'along with' the game, and then deviation costs points, or something like that ?

I realize it's just a game...

You play it by pressing the buttons on the toy guitar/bass controllers that show up on the screen to the beat of the music it plays. The drums work the same way except..they're drums. I'm not sure how the vocals work really.

It's similar to Dance Dance Revolution if you've heard of that.

Sounds like playing Simon, while listening to music . : P

I dun'no... cool way to spend time with the kids, though . It's kind'a hard to bring home some really cool, ultra-violent war game that's intricate, and difficult to master, and then use that as a way to bond with the younguns . Nice one, dude .

Funny thing about these games is that tony speaks kinda the truth. I know 3 of my youngest friends that have now picked up the guitar from playing Guitar Hero. And one is actually doing very well and learning quickly. Not sure you can attribute a lot of it to the game, but I would guess a pretty good part of it came from the ear part of the game. And as well they are getting turned on to a lot of music they might not have heard otherwise. Wolf Mother for instance has a tune on GH 2 that is rated the most difficult, even more so then Freebird. My son and the other friend who is now doing well with guitar on the only 2 from that group that can get a perfect score on it in the most difficult mode. Partly I'm sure is due to the constant exposure to music and understanding how it is made and works.

I talked to dB this afternoon and I'm actually thinking of getting that silly Wii just for the games like that and a couple of the more active sports games.

I'm into first person shooters and driving games and the Wii stinks at both of those so I wont be abandoning my Play Stations any time soon though.

All music related activities are great imo. If someone puts down their real guitar and starts substituting
guitar hero or whatever, then so be it, his/her mind is not into learning/playing guitar anyways. If it (guitar hero or w/e) brings the family together or just generally gets everybodies *** off the couch then it seems like a good thing to me.

We now have a Wii in our house and we love it. It has physical interaction. You can work up a sweat boxing if you like. I picked up the Wii zapper thing and I use it on Medal of Honour and it is pretty intense. Fun stuff.

HOWEVER.. no Wii, PS3, Xbox will ever interfere with my music. I'd still rather spend my time playing guitar or mixing.

The Wii has Medal of Honor which is great online with the Wii Remotes.

It's not that this game (Rock Band) teaches them music, it just gets them into it which many young kids aren't. They get to rock out etc.

It's not really the same as Dance Dance Revolution. Drums are quite realistic (and rather hard) you have have to hit the drum at the right time and you score points etc. Bass is very much like bass, guitar is the most unrealistic, vocals you have to sing in key and the right(ish) words. As you score more points you open up more and harder songs.

However the fun of this game is doing it together as a group. It has a great feature where a better player can "save" lesser players if they are having trouble.
