and when I play back. The crackling is different every time and I cannot get it to stop. It usually last only a moment or two and then will be fine but it usually does it atleast 6 or 7 times a session.
Ive tried multiple computers, new sound card, and different Speakers. I really need help. Is there certain settings i need to change or something?

this is DEFINITELY a buffer/latency setting....what sound card and software are you using? RAM and CPU speed play a HUGE factor...as well as your sound card.

welcome to HRC!

Wyd speaks the truth. Another thing to consider is what quality you record at. If I crank my layla to 96 my computer does not like it at low latency settings. I can record at 44.1 or 48 without problems using my current setup.

Oh my friend, I am affraid you are a little light on the computer. Size of the hardisk is not important but should be at least 7200rpm. The 768 ram is pretty light. SX3 is a pretty intense prog. You might want to monitor your CPU, RAM, and Paging activities while playing back. I think you'll find you are maxing out your computer.

Thanks Walt so what do you suggest going for the high capacity ram.Well Finally I solve this problem it was because of the user problem in the xp 2000.I created the new user and then it work. Now Im facing another problem in input 1 and 2 as when i put it on (bhir bhir) noise keep on coming as the hum. This I cannot figure out yet any suggestion on that Im using the M Audio 1010 LT sound card. And the Input is Balance one.

When I get to mixing I usually adjust the latency from where I had it during tracking. Put it at about 100 for mixing, where I had it at about 10 for tracking. Makes all the difference.

First off, all suggestions here are good. Your fix is great too, basicly taking out some background tasks therefor using less system resources. With SX I had a single core 2mhz processer with 1.5G ram if I remember correctly. I had a few progs other than recording apps, but not too much in the background. Latency was fine without adjustement at 2ms. I remember using as many as 35 tracks with 'nominal' plug-ins, native and never had a problem.

As per latest post, I appologize, but I can't really help. I didn't get my delta1010 until after I had moved on to Cubase 4. I can say that I do not used the "mixer" provided by M-Audio. I use the ASIO driver selecting inputs directly and let Cubase manage everything.

Hi,
I'm another newbie with a similar problem to Alkaline Autumn.
I have Cubasis VST5 & I'm getting the crackling in different places on playback.
I've recently had a new PC set up specifically for recording with these specs:-
AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core 4800+ processor
(2.51GHz), 2GB 400MHz DDR2 RAM, Maxtor 320GB 7200rpm hard disk, M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card (so basically I'm hoping that it's not a capacity issue!)
The recording in question was made at 24bit, sample rate of 96.000khz with a DMA buffer size of 1024 using the M-Audio ASIO drivers.
I've tried changing the audio in/out cables and directed the output to 2 different sets of speakers with no success.
I realise that there may be an infinite number of possible causes but any pointers would be appreciated.

Well Aidan, You certanly have enough computer there. I would look next at what all you have running on the computer using system resources. Look at progs that get loaded when you boot up. Music and video players that run in a minimal form in the background, IM progs, System tool progs: anti-spam, anti-spy, anti-you-name-it. And etc. Disable the soundcard/device that came with your computer if you haven't. There two perspectives to consider when doing this searching. One perspective is looking at the overall resources available to Cubase, ie. do you have a ton of stuff running in the background?. The other perspective being; is there any prog running that is using some critical system resource? The Delta 1010 is finiky about needing a dedicated IRQ in many cases. On the M-Audio web site there is or at least was quite a procedure for working on your computer to ensure that the Delta is on a seperate IRQ.

Thanks for the reply,
The default(on the motherboard)sound card has been disabled and all the devices on the PC are pointed to the Audiophile 2496 card. There are the usual things running in the background in XP but the task manager is only showing around 40% of the CPU capacity being used & there is bags of headroom in the paging file. The VST performance pop-up window in Cubabsis is showing around 70 (peak). I'll try turning off a few background processes & anti virus etc & see if it makes a difference.
Thanks.

40% running quiescent or without cubase sounds high, but 70% with cubase running is not bad at all. Odd. I would look to your IRQ's next for sure. See what is being shared and try to get the 1010 on it's own IRQ if it is not already.

When I moved to Cubase 4, I ended up doing a format and total re-load as windows xp had been running for some time and had a pretty messed up registry from things not totaly removed.

No, Sorry, that's 40% CPU capacity while running Cubasis. I think turning off the wireless internet connection may have helped with the crackle on playback but I can still hear a few so I'll try a fresh recording with the internet connection turned off, in case the remaining crackles have been recorded with the original track.I've also just spotted that the sound card is sharing an IRQ with my graphics card so I'll try and get that sorted out.

Thanks again.
