My first paying gig...

Ok, so I recently met a singer songwriter girl. We got along real well and I let her listen to some of my stuff. Anyway, she asked me to record a 3 song demo for her of which I am asking $50 per song. It's cheap, but I enjoy it and it also will give her a decent recording to show.

This girl has got what it takes and I need to snatch her up for a band cause these are coat tails worth riding ;) Seriously though, I think me we could write really well together as we feed off each other. I'm always excited with a new musician to jam with.

Soooo, here's a real rough mix from yesterday when we were just trying to get a good guitar tone. Will start from scratch now that things have been felt out. Final tracks will have some light drums, soft backing bass and maybe a little soft solo during non-vocal parts.

Her name is Becky D and this song is called "Alone". What do you guys think?

very nice.

nice song,

nice voice,

i'm jealous

<unsolicited opinion time>

maybe capo up 1 whole note, and drop the tempo 15 or so? I'd try those both alone, then together, and see what objective opinions I could drum up.

Tripps, she sounds exactly like a woman that used to sit in with one of my old bands. Are you sure her name isn't Lisa?

no no no... tempo is fine... don't soften it up... think dirty swing.

I can put drums to it if you want to point me to a downloadable file.

She has got a cool voice for sure. Are you playing guitar or is she? I think you caught a good tone for a rough mix there. And its a pretty cool sounding song for sure. Can't wait to hear it in finished version for sure.

That is her playing guitar, I had her do them seperate but she can play and sing it at the same time.

I have the drummer and bassist coming over tomorrow or I would take you up on that Zeke.

And Hue, this is the first female I've ever really jammed with besides my wife. It was my time buddy :)

And no I don't think her name is Lisa. Unless the "D" stand for Lisa, you never know :D

Finally getting this girl back over tonight to do the vocal tracks. Things seem so easy sometimes until you remember everyone has a job and they all work at different times :)

Thanks, I don't think she was too comfy when she did the vox last time. She has never recorded before and had never sang her songs without playing guitar at the same time. Also, we had not planned on Vox and I just said, let's try one for kicks.

So yeah, tonight we start from the top and hopefully she will feel a little more at home. We had only met once before the previous session, but she hung out and had several beers afterwards so I have faith it will go smoother this time.

But yeah, I 100% believe the studio enviornment does not have to be pro, but it does have to be comfortable. People at ease tend to play things better.

which is one of my favorite reasons why i LOVE working in them!

also it's your job help with that as much as you can, ALWAYS have room temprature bottled water around when tracking vocals....take breaks, and generally keep the work flo going at a calm, but productive pace.....provide lunch, or make plans to eat, if you send your client out loving you and the whole recording experience. she will recommend you anytime the subject arises, and your little snow flake will begin to ball.

oh, and take a class on how to control a room full of people disagreeing.....ya have to wear the politician hat sometimes....being in a comfortable envrionment, is to support a sort of "opening up" or "nakedness" so the heart of the song will shine, this leaves people to great emotional vulnerability.....so choose your words carefully, be pleasant, and offer your opinions tactfully.

Yup wyd, I agree 100% and last night went pretty good as it was just her and me. The only problem now is her not knowing what is possible with recordings. For instance, she did an almost perfect guitar take but towards the end had a slip up and stopped. I had to then inform her that sure, if she messes up from the git go then start over. But if there is only one bad part and 4 minutes of greatness that we can punch in. I'm pretty good at explaining things without sounding condescending, I do computer support for people that are... less than knowledgable let's say. I think this helps in that respect.

But yeah, things went good, we got all guitars done and all but one vocal track as her voice was getting fatigued during the end so we wrapped up. Bass player comes over tonight, we have worked together for years as we used to be in a band and we usually finish his work with 1-2 takes each. I'm pretty excited to hear the end result :)

Very cool tune! Great voice.

Good find mate.

So how'd you get her back to your studio eh? :)

"Come up and see my etchings" ?

seriously though.

Can we hear more of her/your stuff soon?

She sounds a lot like a local girl called 'Missy higgins'
