Xmas Project: - DAW Network

Well, I got my dad's old office desktop, well, not really -old- per se. So, what I plan to do is set it up as a linux-based server. My current comp is pretty loaded both HDD-wise and processor wise when working with multipe VST/i's I'm familiar with ubuntu, but I'm also kinda learning my way around fedora-core 8 and RHEL 5 at work.

I've recently done some reading and came across a -very- interesting application called FX-Teleport. And it seems to have been around for awhile. Now, I know this might be runnable under Wine, and that I'd need to drop some cash for it, but I was wondering if anyone around here knew of an equivalent (or close) open-source software that would be linux-native. Or if I could accomplish something similar to FX-Teleport via Samba. Need to do some reading on this stuff that's for sure.

Basically, in a nutshell, I'd like to be able to place my plugins (VST/i or SF2) on the server, be able to access them from my host comp's DAW (FL Studio in my case) Yet, have the workload split between the comps. Probably put the heavier-hitting plugins over on the server, since it has a better processor.

So, any ideas and suggestions?

Over on Reaper, there's a few guys that are getting Reaper running on kubuntu w/ wineasio, he just wrote up a 'walkthrough' so to speak.

Reaper comes with ReaMote, which is a FX remote sharing program. It's been received fairly well over there, plus he's gotten Reaper running around 5 ms with the RT kernal.

Here's a link to the thread:

I can't remember if they got remote working with other PCs, but it's worth a shot, maybe.

I think JACK does this now... apparently netJACK was integrated into the main system... I have no real idea how to use it :) ... and I just killed my box with a failed dist upgrade... :P so I can't test it out right now... I'm burning my eyes out looking at XP for the first time in a couple months...

Huh, that's cool. Good read there pjk. Lots of info to absorb.

And I did not realize there was such a thing as netJACK. And ouch, sorry to hear you killed it. I have ubuntu-studio 7.10 with the RT kernel on this comp for the dual-boot. We use FC8 and RHEL5 at work. I'm technically a university lab-tech, but I do some side stuff for our IT dept whenever possible. I may be giving myself a crash course in php very soon, since either me or the admin has to learn it, if not both of us :P

Networking is certainly new territory for me, but I'm learning a bit at work, working with the e-mail server, and starting to help set up and test a web server. Our admin is an OS lover, but has also been dubbed "the linux brat" by others. Learning quite a bit from him so far. If I can get my little pet-project here to take off, and work properly, well, should be a good experience booster hehe :)

Edit: amost forgot:
Did some more reading on how FX-Teleport works. What I've gathered so far is that a) you have to have a license for 2 machines, since the vsts have to be installed on both: one on the server side for the grunt work, and one on the host-DAW for the GUI. b)The FX-Teleport sends the midi-data over the ethernet from the host to the server, and in turn the server processes it through the VST/i, and then sends the audio back over the LAN to the host DAW. At least I THINK that's what I read. Intresting stuff.

I love PHP, been using it for a few years, for my inhouse data work (w/ mysql) and for our online purchasing manipulation.

dB has been in PHP quite a bit (this site running on it, i beleive). I'm just a self-taught pseudo-hack, building upon my knowledge when I can.

my dev server is RH9, but our web server is RC5. I was going to set up our mail server on it, but our IT staff pushed for exchange on our file server, so they won out.

I've been waiting to try out ubuntu-studio, but I don't have access to a DVD burner, just CDs, so I've been putting it off. The write-up over on Reaper is for kubuntu, which is 1 CD, so I may give that a whirl as dual-boot.

Just gotta find time after the holidays, i think.

Hopefully Reaper will come out as a native Linux app soon, so no more wine. Then hopefully, Reaper / Reamote will work between 2 linux boxes without problem. That'd be Sweet!

better to be a linux brat than microsofts ***** :)

Yeah, I was trying to upgrade to UbuntuStudio 7.10 ...didn't work out too well :) I'll just do a fresh install.

So very very true.

And at least php looks similar to java-script and C++. I have the most experience with C++, took the intermediate course, but it's been quite some time, so I'm rusty to say the least. Also re-remembering html, and teaching myself CSS on the side for my personal webpage up on my ISP's space.

And sorry to hear about having MS Exchange forced on ya. If it makes ya feel better, me and Wally (our IT network/security Admin that I work with) are rushing to finalize our e-mail server with squirrelmail, since we've spent a lot of time getting the original project up and running (and having 2 or 3 other projects dumped on us in the process), and the directors are contemplating just outsourcing to the university-wide e-mail system. So, we're going to try and wow them. Despite requests from Ding (the other IT guy) to halt the webmail, and focus more on the current situation.

Funny thing, is we originally had they system up and running flawlessly under RHEL4, just a few final tests before swapping it into the server room, and putting into production. Unfortunately, Dr. Ding, the IT Administrator (and Wally's supervisor) decided to go with a larger HDD. Problem is, we were running the system on Raid 0 or 1, whichever has the mirroring going on. So we said a quick swap wouldn't work, and migrating the old system over via tar wouldn't work. Well, Ding decides to go through with it just to prove us wrong....what happens...he completely trashes the system. So we start getting ready to try to fix it...no success, so Wally decided to rebuild from the ground up seeing as RHEL5 had just been released.

The bad thing, is I gave my e-mail hands-on IMAP tutorial to the rest of the lab staff already, and they had the handouts and documentation I had written up. SO, guess who gets to play the scapegoat? Two months later, we're back at being production ready, only to find that the powers that be were starting to think about outsourcing, so we're adding webmail to try and impress them...but we're not letting them know hehe.

As for the stuff that's been dumped on us, we're currently working on installing and configuring a blade-server system, and a SAN that we will be getting very soon. Thanks to bio-informatics down the hall :P Course, they still have yet to respond back to us whether they want us to go with PVFS or Lustre.

Anyways, Wally and Ding will be doing most the grunt work since it's all new to me, but I'll be helping a bit from the sidelines, course, we'll all be learning quite a bit. We've just been scratching the surface of the whole infiniband thing.
