speaker setup

Hello, I'm pretty green on this stuff... know enough to get me in trouble! I need some guidance on using a single mono mix. Can I split the output from one side the EQ using a y cable going into both side of the amp so I can keep the ohm rating of my speakers at 4ohms? Or is there an easier way to do this.
Thanks for the help.

What is the make and model of the amp you want to try this with?

some are capable of doing that. Others are not. And yet others will run in Bridged mono mode with a pair of speaker's.

Also what type of speakers are you trying to feed with the mono signal?

Welcome to HRC by the way.

Thanks! nice to find you guys.

Just purchased 2 XLS Crown amps(one for monitors) I think they are a brand new model. The EQ is a MEQ from DOD.
The speakers are Fender 2way with 15" and horn similar to their current model Ace 15, four(4) of them. Basically, I am attempting to take the mono mix running into one side of the EQ and split the output to both channels of the amp running two(2) speakers on each channel of the amp. Not sure if that is kosher or a better way to accomplish the task. Hope that helps.

OK, with that amp I would not suggest going that route as it could cause a problem. It will work but what is going to happen is you are feeding the signal back onto itself by having a common ground link going to both input channels of the amp.

My suggestion would be to just keep your pan settings dead center on your mixer. This will essentially give you a mono signal coming out of the speakers. They will both contain the single signal of whatever that mixer channel is sending out. Even though you are hooking them up as a left and right it will only be a mono signal unless you set the panning to one side or the other.

I was not thinking about issues with grounding .... there's my "greeness" showing through! Thanks. I was hoping I could use one side of the EQ for monitors and one side for mains. I guess I might have to buy another EQ....
here is a dumb question though, is there a device that works like a crossover(like you would use for bi and tri amping situations) but for a multiple full range speaker set up?

I'm not sure about that. Most crossovers are either 2, 3 or 4 channel crossovers. And they are made the same basically from one to the other.

The speakers you are using will have a small crossover built into them though.

Are you thinking of sending different cut off points to the two different pairs of speakers?

I just looked up your equipment online. Your anp is rated @ 4ohms. Your speakers are rated @ 8ohms. Techniclly, you do not need to "Y" your amp at all. Going back to a previous post I did here, you will find that you can run both of your seakers off of one side of the amp. leaving the other side for a single monitor mix. Just put your FOH speakers in parellel. In other words, in on the frist speaker, then using the speaker, out to the next.
