Laptop issues

I'm at my wits end with this thing;

Everytime I go to turn on my laptop and it boots in Diagnostic Mode and the keyboard is non-responsive. The system analysis comes back fine until the "where colors displayed? (Y/N)? Where it just beeps and is non-responsive. On rare occasion it will boot just fine, though.

I've take it apart and checked various connections, everything seems to be in order. I've hose it with air and gotten it squeaky clean inside and out, I've checked BIOS settings, looked for stuck keys, and still it does it. Anyone have ANY idea what could be causing it?

I would suggest the keyboard plate probably need to be replaced, or ::gasp:: the motherboard...the keyboard connection, in the keyboard or motherboard, being flakey could explain all of that.

Yeah, perhaps it could be inside that connection and I just cant see it- I hope its not the mobo though. Any idea where I could get a new keyboard plate other than ebay? (I dont trust comp parts from there) It's a Dell Inspiron 6000.

No idea, I guess I'd go to a Dell authorized repair dude...

could be a lot of things, not necessarily just the keyboard.

You could try unplugging the keyboard and using a USB keyboard maybe?

Yeah, I'll try and set that up the next time I can get it to actually boot. Never thought about the good Ol USB keyboard trick, lol.

Keith, you should be able to simply plug in the USB keyboard without having to disengage the onboard keyboard. I do that with mine at work as I hate laptop keyboards. Or any tiny keyboard for that matter.

heh, i actually bought a USB keyboard with the same scissors type action as my laptop. it's a much faster and quieter keystroke.

If your built-in keyboard is causing issues, you may need to unplug it though, doesn't it see an additional keyboard as a parallel keyboard (i.e. i can use both the laptop keyboard and USB at the same time if i were that talented).

Im sure it could, but I havnt set up any drivers for USB keyboards or mice on that machine yet, so unless I can get it to boot and install the drivers, it wont accept the connection.

If its XP or above the generic drivers for it to boot are already there.

And ya kenneth you are probably right. Although mine dis ables the onboard when I plug in a mouse or keyboard.

you running XP? it should automatically recognize them if you've got your USB ports being recognized at all...

you could try just unplugging the keyboard and booting it without a keyboard whatsoever?

mine runs in parallel... must vary by machine. I've got a Usb keyboard and mouse plugged in, but i'm currently using my laptop keyboard and touchpad. lol. Seems counterproductive, i know. haha.

thats the thing, windows doesnt even begin to boot- Im not sure how it all works, but I plugged in a USB keyboard and it isnt working, still just going to system diagnostics and hanging on on the displayed colors screen. I know it should recognize the keyboard, but... I give up!! I'm going to bring it to a Dell Dude.

White flag.

I'm kissing the ring..

Throwing in the towel...
