Hello all.
I've made a handful of tracks on my laptop using the Reason 3.0 software. Listening to playback through the headphones with my laptop, everything seems in order and is mixed properly.
However, I've mixed the .rps files down to .wav and listened to them in various cd players, and much to my dismay, the mix sounds different depending on which cd player it's in.
So, my question is as follows: What am I doing wrong, and what is causing the mixes to sound different from player to player?

Dec 04, 2007 02:50 pm That would be your monitoring source. When you mix using headphones, it's hard to tell what kind of depth you're dealing with and will lead to the problem you're describing. Might be time to invest in some good Studio Monitors.
Dec 04, 2007 08:23 pm thanks for the help...also, i'm not very familiar with sound cards, but i do believe that my laptop doesn't have one...could anyone send me in the proper direction to find a good, reasonably priced one?

Dec 05, 2007 01:03 pm its because all speakers are made different and therfore sound different. the goal is to get a nice mix that sounds most similar on every speaker. But it will always sound different. So, what you will want to do is look into mastering or having your mixed down .wav files mastered. Thsi will help with what your issue.

Dec 05, 2007 03:57 pm Hey Brandon, on the sound card issue, does you laptop have USB or Firewire? That will help figure out a card for you.
Dec 06, 2007 04:15 am yeah, mix translation is one of the hardest things to get right....it's like painting in a room with red lights....then taking it to a hospital and wondering why the heck you used so much blue....you can learn to compensate a bit, but this will take nothing but trial and error type experience.....i like to import a similar styled commercial release right into my project so i can quickly a/b my mix with a 'pro' track.
