LP 3 humbucker toggle?

Hello All. This is my first post but have enjoyed reading your discussions for a while. My son has been playing a Squier beginner guitar for 18 mos. and is doing well. Decided to upgrade for a 15th b'day present. He had been talking w/ friends about a black Epi Les Paul with the gold colored hardware. I got one on Ebay but when it shipped, the treble/rhythm switch broke, just below the cap. I have found a zillion switches for guitars w/ 2 pick-ups but no luck w/ the 3 hummers. Anyone have an idea where I might find one?

I have been interested in the Epiphone Les Paul for a while now. I have read alot about them from reviews all over the place and stuff about that switch being kind of weak comes up every once in a while. I decided that the PRS SE Singlecut was better for me but that's niether here nor there.

You could just Google it and try to find it or stop by a shop like Guitar Center and ask somebody who knows what they're talking about where to buy them.

You might look through these but I don't know if any of them will work.

I believe you are looking for the first item on this page:

***EDIT: Actually, scroll down the page a bit and they have a cream-tipped one that is probably more like the one on your son's guitar. ***

www.guitarpartsresource.c...gleswitches.htm

From the looks of things, if you don't find it there, they don't exist!

Good choice on the Epiphone Les Paul! Sounds like the Black Beauty model, with the three gold-covered pickups. Neil Young would be proud.

My 14 year-old son bought an Epiphone Les Paul Cherryburst, and he loves it!

Oh, and welcome to HRC!!

Thanks, Guys. Jim, I think the link you sent me is the answer. I don't know how I missed that in my search! They don't list a gold switch for the 3 pickup model but I don't think putting a chrome switch will make that big a difference. The picture they have up looks just like the one in the guitar.. Now, if I can just keep all the wires straight when I move from the old one to the new one, I'll be doing good. Thanks again, John

Hey John, the link Jim put up does indeed have those switches. And if I'm not mistaken you can call or email and ask for the specific switch you want. The Epi switch is the exact same switch used in the Gibson. I used to own one for a very short while.

Follow up: Guitar parts resource says they do not have that switch in gold..."nearly impossible to find". I could always buy the long gold 2 pickup switch and try to swap the toggle posts, which is the part that's broken. My son is hesitant to put the chrome on his guitar with most of the other hardware gold, which I can understand.

I just had a wild idea but it might do the trick.

You might be able to get the chrome one painted. Don't ask me who, how, where, or with what because I don't have a clue but it might be a possibility.

I can understand not wanting to put chrome on there when the rest is gold hardware but to me it wouldn't matter. I am in to indie-rock and alternative music so mismatched hardware would look good to me but I'm kinda strange like that.

Very odd. I'll check and see but I'm sure that is were he ordered the switch, which was gold. Not too long ago either.

But I guess chrome would not look all that bad either. You could still use the gold nut ring and such.

Yeah, that seems weird to me, also. The person that emailed me back did not put his/her name on the email so I don't know exactly who it was. I thought about just calling and talking to a real person.

They are still making these guitars, right?

I was just reading Guitar World (or similar, I can never remember...) and there's an interview with Jimmy Page about his "Black Beauty" Les Paul (3 Pups, Bigsby, Gold Hardware). Apparently the Gibson custom shop has made a special toggle switch for him that allows all sorts of pup cominations. I think it clicks forward and then works as normal (if that makes sense).
Not sure if there's any way to get one, but it would be very cool. Maybe contact Gibson...

Ya, they are still making it. zZounds is selling them for $699 now. I would think you can get the switch direct from Epiphone or Gibson. I did not find a direct link to parts on the Epiphone site, but I'm sure they must have a parts dept.

Well I just clicked on the service link on Epiphones site and it takes you directly to Gibson. Big surprise there, not!

Anyway, in following a few links and getting to what I thought might be a parts list it has caps and pots. And what appear to be 2 switches listed.

I would think getting in touch with either Epi or Gibson will yield the results your looking for.

OK, here's the deal: I bought 2 switches from guitar parts resource...a gold 2 pup model and a chrome 3 pup model. Came in the mail yesterday. Took the switch contact for the third pup off of the chrome switch and added it to the gold switch (very easy to do, just 2 screws holding the contact "sandwich" together). Tried to put it in the guitar but the threads at the top were not long enough to extend above the guitar and get the nut on. Back to square one.

It just cant be that hard to get s switch for a guitar that is still being made. Or at least the correct one. That is odd that they would send a switch that is supposed to fit that guitar and it doesn't.

I agree, wholeheartedly! But, down at the bottom of the same page where the switches are located, they have "deep threaded" nuts. The Epiphone forum guys suggested that they had used these to make the switchcraft switches work. Makes me wonder if the top thickness is greater on the Epiphone and/or LP models.
Anyway, after $40.55 in shipping charges for $60.26 in switches/hardware, maybe I'm gonna get this taken care of. Takes away, a little, from the "good deal" on the guitar but no biggie. This was for my son's 15th B'day and he loves it.

Thanks for your help.

PS I have not participated in "forum" discussions very much. How long can you keep a thread alive between responses? 5 or 6 days or do you go back and check for longer?

The thread will stay active and viewable forever pretty much. WE have had guys go back to threads that are 5 years old and bring them back alive.
