Hi Everyone,
I'm new here to this forum although I've been playing and doing home recordings for some time.
I am awaiting the arrival of my first digital machine.Has anyone here have anything good or bad to say about the Fostex MR8? It looks like a cool little machine for putting down some decent sounding ideas.

Yeah I love this machine

The only problem is the small amount of memory...invest in a flash card with more memory.
If you want an example of the songs iv recorded you can go here:

hey rick,
I also just picked up an mr8 and so far i love it.
i`ve only messed around so far, nothin REAL yet.I bought the Package from musicians friend, and the mic kinda sucks but it works for now. This machine is soooo easy to use.Effects are.....well you might say they are so so.As for the space issue,I record a track or two, copy them to my p.c.,leaving the originals on the mr8,then do a couple more tracks. So i have the originals to listen two. Then you can start deleting the tracks one or two at a time.I`ve recorded four tracks of tunage with space left though.I move the tracks to my p.c.one at a time so i can edit each one in
n-track.
There are some tricks here and there that i`ve
learned ,like in the manual it says you can`t move individual tracks. It says you have to bounce everything to track 7/8 and convert to stereo wave file. However each file(track) is already a
wav file. You plug the machine into the p.c. and it
automaticaly adds a drive in "my computer",open the drive and look in the folders and there are your files!!!!Its very easy.I know you`ll love this thing.Plus...
There was a couple of little bugs in the machine and Fostex immediateley put up an OS patch to download straight to the MR8!!!!!! I really believe they have a nice machine for the money and are prepared to back it.
Good luck bro,I look forward to hearing some mass tunes from ya!!I also am working on something to throw up here soon!
Later,

im also thinking of buying the package from Musicians Friend.. the $349.99 with the Nady SP-9 and the AKG K-66 Headphones, is the Headphones 1/4" jack or 1/8" ?? im thinking of also buying a Behringer Mixer with it.. maybe a 8 mono inputs.. then 1-4 sub outs on one channel of the MR-8 and 5-8 on another sub out on another channel of the MR-8.. is the quality of the MR-8 good without a Mixer?? and how is the Effects?

The effects are nothin to write home about really.
Mostly the distortion isn`t that great. It`s funny cause I just bought a Behringer MX802A,and I like it also.4 mono and 2 stereo inputs, phantom power of course.I run the stereo main outs to the two main ins(a/b) on the mr8,and for playback just switch,go from the stereo outs on the mr8.
Oh,and the headphone jack is 1/4 ,Everything on the mr8 is,with the exception of the mic inputs obviously.

If you get a mixer in the Behringer UB FX-Pro series, like the 1622 or the 1204, it comes with a slew of pretty decent effects in a built in effects loop.

Pretty good reports from years gone by here. Anyone know if these are still up to par or would the MKII (or similar) be a better bet in todays market?

Yeah
That was the point of digging out this older thread. (I know you don't like to many duplicated thread lines)

Sorry if I didn't make it clear.

I'm really just fishing again for ideas of what to get with my meager income and liked the input on this thread on the old MR8.

I figured as the old one would work out cheaper than a MKII that it may have been an option for me, if it was still looked at as a good piece of gear. Time does tend to change opions and something that was good then may be laughed at now!

I see. There are so many piece of gear now that are mkII I wasn't sure which you were looking for.

I will say there have been vast improvements since the original for sure. But, what is more important is the fact that if the older piece of gear fits your needs without the extra goodies on the newer one. Then saving money is always good.

If you are in it for the long haul and want something more up to date then obviously the newer unit would be the better choice.
