OK

I want a show of hand for those of you who will record a random cover in a random style.

Basically i want to choose a bunch of random songs and assign a random style to the lucky recipient.

I'll do a hat draw of the User, the song and then the style.

For example

Guitar Jim - Under my Skin - Hard Rock.

I'd like at least 5 people to get started.

I'll be the first to throw my hat in the ring.

So far the we have

1. Bleak

Who's up for it?

when jammin' with buds, we can turn ANY song into a reggae or ska/punk style. it's so freakin' easy...

my new thing is rap songs sung in a country style (kinda like that Gin and Juice cover)...i can totally belt out Ice Ice Baby in an Allen Jackson type style....it's quite interesting.

Well, I should say nowhere except playing bars getting free drinks, perhaps a light groupie scene of sex with loose women and such...which for some, is great in and of itself.

I should be more accurate in saying covers never make you a huge star, local success, regional success and decent money is entirely possible.

i have a suggestion. if anyone wants to try 'steppin' out' by joe jackson in a modern style, i would like to hear that. i tried to modernize it last year and failed. there's something about that song that's really good, behind the keyboard riff. something in the chords and the energy. if someone could modernize it, metalize it, darken it (not punk, tho) i would really be interested in hearing that...

All right, challenge accepted. Now to

- learn the chords
- learn the lyrics
- learn about reggae song structure
- arrange my version
- learn and rehearse my version
- record
- mix

...simple, right? I'll be ready sometime in 2010.

But seriously, what's our time table looking like for this project? I'd say keep it quick just to keep it moving. Like 2 or 3 weeks tops, or else everybody will get caught up on other projects or just forget about it altogether. Especially with the holidays coming up quickly.

They don't have to be top quality, flawless recordings. Just a proof of concept that you can arrange songs in a different style than you're used to. I think that's the challenge, not testing your engineering skills.

I'm agreeing with T, 2~3 weeks, or i'll get caught up into other stuff.

I like the concept you posted; challenge of arrangement style, not engineering skills.

I too, was looking up my genre this morning.

I'm definitely hearing steel drums in my version =).

Herb, do you need the backing track for it? Let me know, I will look in my project files to see if I have a decent version of it if you need it. I can even make it a bit on the electro side if you would like.

AS for the G n R thing. Ya, I guess it does boil down to Slash being a rather blues based player. But to turn that into Grunge is going to be an odd duck as it is so close already.

Okay, I'm thinking "Walk Like An Egyptian" in the style of Leonard Cohen...

I've been humming it all day now, and it makes me smile.

"Come As You Are" as a ballad. Do you think that means like Barry Manilow and Johnny Mathis type of ballad, or and old time folk kind of ballad?

From The Dictionary: Ballad - A narrative poem, often of folk origin and intended to be sung, consisting of simple stanzas and usually having a refrain.

I guess that answers my question. Guess I'll have to dust off the old acoustic guitar and listen to a few of my old Joan Baez records!

it's funny you should mention Polka as i was so close to including it but it pretty hard if yo don't have a whole bunch of brass insutruments lying around.

I think 2-3 weeks is a great time frame. anyone lagging towrad the end we can all just poke with a stick.

I tried a few wacks at making Grunge sound different from what G n R sounded like, but it keeps coming out kind of punk sounding. Funny enough I was chatting with someone at work today and they though G n R was Grunge. So you can see the pickly I'm in trying to make even the valiant effort at making it sound different.

I'll get there.

Jim, I'm thinking the interpretation of Ballad is on you there. Any type of Ballad I am guessing will qualify. At least in my eyes.

I'm hoping you go along the lines of Roy Orbisons Crying. Can you hit those hi notes?

I keep hearing an organ in it though. I'm trying to find a Grunge era band that used an organ sound, I know there were several. That and those twirly damn guitar sounds of the like from Sound Garden keep spinning in my head.

And oh ya, the guitar has not been my main instrument of choice for several years, boy do I suck now! At least on the Slash part.

Alright... I did some searching/listening to this, howyousay "foxtrot".

Maybe someone who is more familiar with it could suggest a keyword, or something...

It seems that Santatna isn't too far from it... with hotter guitar. Especially live. Should I be reaching for something more like muzak... more subdued? Big band with guitar... more swing-like ? Is that it ?

Anyhow, I certainly took a lot of "artistic" liberties on this one. It sounds more like a techno song than hip hop but I'm hoping that this will still fall under the "dance" category.

I've been listening to my Bob Marley boxed set nonstop for 2 days now. It's actually a great collection. So there's no question where my inpiration is going to come from. And doing an Elvis song...does anybody else see the Dread Zeppelin connection here?

BeerHunter, if you think you're out of your element (and I agree that the Great White North may not be the most distant point on earth from Compton geographically, but it may as well be LOL), think of me, "Mr. Caucasian" himself, squeezing any authenticity at all out of a Marley-inspired beat. yep, waltz can be like polka, incorporating the 3/4 time. Waltzes are usually more mellow, and violin-like, whereas polka is more upbeat, and bouncy.

polka often has clarinet, squeezebox, and maybe some horns, often a tuba (not a sousaphone).

often polka are in 2/4 or 4/4 time as well.

Roll out the barrel is a pretty well known polka. I think that's in 2/4.

Can't tell I've got an Eastern Europe heritage, can ya?

(ukrainian, actually)

Doing WLAE in either style should prove entertaining =).

Oh man... this IS crazy !

Just to take the latin out of a Santana song... there's both something very right and very wrong about this 'challenge'.

I think I have it worked out though, and will try recording some of it tonight. I'll have to record the music before even attempting the vocals... it's just too weird sounding, compared to the real song. It's very hard to even play the keys Am,F,Em without sounding somewhat latin, but I think I've successfully rendered the latino from the bugger.

Fun stuff, Bleak... great idea !

Such butchery !

Hey guys, thx. This is what I'd like to call Cartman and Tom Jones singing a techno version of Feeling Alright.

As for the speed... well timing was good. My wife has been away in Palm Springs since Sunday so I've had a lot of time to spend on music.

This was fun to do. I had no idea what direction I was going when I started and just kinda made it up as I went along. It helped having a couple of daughters around that are into techno/dance and they were able to give me some pointers.

Susanna Hoffs loves me I tell you...

Baroque? As in Bach?
Didn't the Rolling Stones already do a Baroque-ish thing? Lady Jane?

Not a Stones fan at all, so this should prove strangely interesting, if not painful.

Nice one that I get a 17th century musical style, and everyone else gets 20th/21st century. Who do you think I am? Richie Blackmore? Geesh.

I'll just go take some classical lessons, then. Oh, and I'll go get a damned harpsichord....

Notice how Bleak "randomly" gets a 12-bar with 'country'. Ooh, what a stretch...

Not for him the trappings of pre-industrial European high-brow music.

I hear y'a TallChap... be careful...

I'm not really sure how far accross this 'musical-reach' I will actually get. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of deffinition to this foxtrot thing... now after a coupl'a days of messing with it, I'm feeling like I'm trapped in an elevator with way too much valium in my veins.

Majors are minors, and I'm doing things like turning 'off' the tone on my guitar to get 'that sound'. I'm also starting to think this 'challenge' is more of an evocation of all that is eval within this dimension. : p

Don't feel bad guys. I did try a drop D on the G n R tune and it sucked so bad I almost cut a finger off to stop the pain in my head.

But, I will carry on toward some sort of desecration of said tune.

And BH!!!!! That is killer for sure. I didn't know what to expect when the drums started, it has an island sort of twist to it I might add. Then the vocal started, which drew a chuckle with the pitch shifting having a strange effect which made my toe start tappin. Then the second vocal part came in and I almost felt as if I was in the Caribbean or something like that. But it drove onward into its own glory.

You took some liberty with it which I found interesting. This may let me rest a bit knowing my grunge may come out sounding a bit punkish in the end.

I really would have thought it to be easier. Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

Thanks guys, but you are way too kind. This project consisted of a bunch of loops I did in Reason and other MIDI programming. One thing about cover stuff is the music is already written and when it comes to techno/dance stuff, it really didn't take much work to pull it all together. I made this into a techno song but had I tried to stay true to the "hip hop" genre, it would have been a lot harder. I felt I had to make it some what of a parody because I simply don't take techno/dance too seriously. Hense, the Cartman/Tom Jones contribution.

I had it easy. All the rest of you have a much harder combination to work with.

EDIT: Actually, time permitting, I'm going to try a true "hip hop" version of the same song and see if I can pull something together.

I actually have given that some thought. I may do it in a swirly synth sound instead though. But I will give it a try on the 5 string just to see what happens. I have discovered though that slowing the tempo way down has a strange effect on the feel of it as well.

That was the idea. Although it would be impressive if you could play that line smoothly at full speed on bass, it would probably sound better a bit slower.

ok after a few more run-throughs, i've decided to forgo the doc completely and track these vocals ASAP, i have less than an octave range but the rasp is so PERFECT....i'm gonna do this this real soon if i can pull it off....here's the shitter, i can't do it at home!!! haha fortunately i've got friends with setups that are adequate. i just can't believe how good my voice sounds for this specific sound....it's too good to pass up.

perhaps i should try hammering on after all these "pull off's" i've been talking about....lol

Chris: 'Choice' of the challenge is not part of the challenge... y'a got'ta stretch ourtside the comfort-zone. Something ala 'nothing you would ever choose yourself... ltterally random' .

Nonetheless, that would sound cool/odd... do it anyway ! : )

bah! dooin' "walk like an egyptian" as Cohen is every bit out of the box as anything i can think of.....granted this was not 'forced' upon me, i did choose it after the suggestion....but i think i'll have a dandy of a time making it happen, which is what the thread is about.....i would have NEVER put the two together without this thread....and i intended to stay out of it...but when i saw it, i had to go for it....forgive me for being inspired, my bad! §=oP

ah, it's all for fun. nobody's gonna fire you for doing XYZ in ABC style.

I say, the more the merrier. It's a 'action' project, not a 'result' project, I'd think.

I'm looking forward to hearing it, actually.

My drummer bud and I spent most of the day on my song yesterday (sat). It's coming together quite nicely, after many hours of creative frustration =/.

Herb - Love you're song mate. Where did the music come from? there is something very engagin about the way you have done this. Certainly one of the most unique peices i've ever heard.

WYD - Yeh mate, I can't control what you do. It would have been only fair that you were subject to the same rules as every one else but as PJK and Hue said this is all for fun and i will also be looking forward to it.

Keith Warren - Sorry about the late response mate, just confirm you want one and i'll sort it out.

ok, have i missed anyone?

The music is the theme from The Outer Limits, with the prelude from the movie Vertigo thrown in.

My deepest apologies to Dominic Frontiere and Bernard Hermann.

Herb, that was stellar indeed. I've got to admit it was almost spine tingling for a bit there.

Hey BH, that is going to be pretty cool if you ask me. I'm feelin alright about the bass line myslelf. (pun intended)

Can't wait to hear it with vocals on it.

And ya Herb, my bad for not mentioning the depth you added by taking some liberties with the working. Great stuff indeed.

Nice hijack there WYD!
Geesh.

Okay, per Bleak's idea. Steppin' Out by Joe Jackson in a 'modern style' - whatever that is. I'm thinking along the lines of the new-breed rock bands like AFI, My Chemical Romance, etc. (as a 42 year old - as of Friday - I'll say it...) they all sound very similar to me.
Should be fun, and I get to use a fuzzbox!

Can't wait to hear WYD's version of WLAE.
I may do my own for fun anyway, now that I'm all pumped up for it.
Let's see how he JJ song works out.

Love the bass line. There's my starting point.

BTW - even though I'm marked as "complete" I am working on a new version that is hip hop and not techno/dance. Should have it done this week sometime. Maybe I will be a "M&M wrapper" for halloween to get me in the spirit.

Herb: You f***ing crack me up! That's excellent. When I saw "Jazz" then heard the instrumental swells at the beginning, I was confused. I no longer am.

Magic, mate.

Thinking about "Steppin' Out" in a 'modern style' got me thinking about these...er.. young whippersnappers ...yeah....that's the ticket...out there with their makeup and tattoos...for goodness sake.... and earrings and the style of music they play.

(Geezer alert)

Funnily enough it wasn't a huge stretch (sonically) to people like "The Jam" and "The Motors" and similar from 25+ years ago. Odd that. Time passes, but nothing really changes.

So, my question:

What exactly is "Modern"? Mod? Bristol Trip Hop? I don't know now...

I think Amy Winehouse is relatively 'Modern' in some senses, but it's all old Motown at the end of the day...
(Oh, and "Love is a losing game" is the best song in the last ten years...Okay?)

Hey TC, when I think of modern, I think of My Chemical Romance, Greenday, Sum 41 and the likes. No idea if that is correct, just what I think it is. But then again, that is what I would think emo is so who the hell knows.

speakin' of strippers, we had one out at the bar tonight (owners birthday) and BOY was she a hit!!!....picture a bunch of drunks that can't get laid locked into a BAR with a totally nude stripper rompin' around! man it was funny! i was on the clock gettin' paid to watch the shenanigans go down! workin' in a bar is prolly not the best thing for me, but damn i love it!

heh, we're a 21 and up bar (due to the smoking laws here) and she turned 19 a week ago...so the way i see it, it's 21 and up unless ya get neked! whoot!

on the subject of the thread, my voice is showing sines of improvement, which means the clock is-a-tickin' for me....i'm having scheduling issues with my buds though.....grrr i've GOT to do this while i'm sick!

Steppin' Out.....

B**tards...

Okay, need help from you git-fiddle chaps.
I've been able to tweak the verses etc. to get it kind of where I need it. The intro has this be-otch chord in there which just isn't a easy jump (for me, as I'm a bass player...). The intro is: F#maj7, Emaj7/F#, Bmaj9, F#m7, B, E, B, D/F#, E, A/C#, E

See that Bmaj9 in there? Nasty brute.
Awkward. Is there a cool sounding inversion that's easy to play?

Hue, that is very cool indeed. I love the Setzer sound going on. That walking bassline is pretty good as well. Well put together. As for the muted trumpet thing, I could go either way on that. You could set it way back in the mix and prevent it from hitting over the vocal part. I think there are enough low tones in the vocal that they might stay ahead of it.

As for mine, I won't have time to work on it again until the weekend. But I still can't get the suck knob turned down on it. :-)

Shovel's are down and ready for the assault on the snow though. And all the other summer yard goodies are put away. I do need one more nice day to run out and drop some seed and fertilizer though before the snow flies. I better hurry!

And Bleak, if you need the tunes put up I can afford the space and bandwidth as well. Just let me know.

yeah bleak, my voice got better and i'm considering fracking it up on purpose just to do it, i've got the darn thing composed (mostly), just not recorded. it's pretty much on the back burner for me (although i have full intentions of gooing ahead with it as i do like the song)

it's a bit of a cop-out to say i'm too buzy as that means working 50 hours a week and 'wasting' my time the rest of the time...but what i wrote IS sticking to me and eventually i'll spit it out...just not sure when, i'm considering renting a studio for 4 hours and banging it out, but my current financial situation is far from ideal (surprise!). i'll pull this thread up long after it's dead and submit mine, but it's gonna be awhile.

oh yeah my song was "walk like an Egyptian" ala Lenard Cohen.

H'okay... did a 'lil tweaking . Fixed some of the timing goofs, and brought it up to the proper level . Should be good to go, now .

Noted as 'FINAL'...

Sweeter then sweet. I gotta get this on a CD and drag it to the car for a cruise. Still nicely done and sounding good.

5 out of 5 stars on this one.

Ok,

I have made all the songs playable directly from the original post.

The server is in Australia so if it gets to painful then let me know and i'll take up Noize's kind offer. Although you should all have Broadband by now :)

If you want to download anyone's song then you can do so from the members profile, or my server.

HUE - Thats dead set bloody awesome mate. I wish i could have been at the recording session, i can only imagine you guys had a blast.

PJK - Do you want to do up a cover mate?

Oh yeah! heh, had a foggy head moment.

Anybody have some ideas, shoot them out.

I'll try throwing some things together.

How 'bout using a piece of an account-photo from each of the persons involved ?

I thought about having the inside 2 pages (inside a foldout) have each persons pic (whichever pic you want) and a couple lines of text, whatever you want.

Have 6 or so on one side, and 6 or so on the other side.

I'd probably grab the online avatars for now, but would work with whatever was presented.

I need some cover ideas though . . .

Like, as in 'concepts' ?

How 'bout things that are easilly identified with the net in general ?

Kind'a tricky, though...

... different screenshots maybe ?

What info are you looking to put into this thing ? If any .

here's a (very) quick mockup, to indicate my idea for layout.

http://www.kondratko.com/images/album_art.jpg

Course, it'd all be based upon whatever each person wants in their section, I'd think. pictures, text, etc. can be whatever each person wants.

I'd have to make it a little more packed, as there's 10 songs, so 5 on each side.

probably something silly on the back, and probably something silly on the front.

It doesn't seem like a project that anybody wants to put their personal data along with, so I figured our HRC info would be adequate.

Course, it's all good. Put in whatever you want =).

I'll probably put a link to HRC on the back, and maybe a HRC type title to the project, like HRC Follies, or something like that.

pjk, I'll email you something to use for my image a little later. Using my avatar would be funny, but...

Your avatar came to mind right away, as you change yours up pretty frequently =).

BH changes up pretty often too, so whatever everyone wants in their spot, is their own choice.
