sorta off topic, but a "pulsing" playback?

folks, I have a strange question, I've got a bunch of cd's that i've ripped to iTunes, but when I play it back over my speakers, I can definitely hear a "pulse" sort of thing going on in the volume, like the sound is actively being damped at somewhat regular points.

Is this a result of a "smashed" album? Has anybody else heard this happening on their systems? I will say the overall level of the songs I can really hear it on is quite a bit higher than ones that don't "seem" to pulse. I guess I'm curious as to if I'm hitting a hardware limit and it's compensating or this is just crappy mixing? The CDs, specifically (among a couple others) is Project 86: Rival Factions and Skillet: Comatose.

I'm just playing it over a laptop soundcard and logitech x-540's.

I think that there is an option in most media players that will automatically level the sound. See if it's in the ripping options, or if its just a playback option that you can uncheck.

yeah, checked the playback thing, it's not checked, but it might be in the ripping? I'll poke around...

Also check to see if you have the Variable Bit Rate on. When some of the compression formats uses that it can sometimes have a bad effect on the way a tune sounds. Not very common but something to look at.

nope, no variable bit rate... although, itunes has a

"smart encode" thing that was checked... perhaps their "smart encode" means they damp the signal? Wouldn't surprise me, some crappy feature like that from apple.

lol, I also increased the bitrate to 192kbps to see if the "lossy" ripping was making a difference...

The smart encode may be a variable bit rate encoding and probably is. Try not using it and see if that helps.
