Recent legal cases in the music industry?

So I have to do this B f'n S assignment for my degree in "audio engineering" *cough*. I have to write a critical analysis of a recent legal case in the music industry.

Anybody heard about anything? Has behringer been taken to court yet? If anybodies seen anything funny, that'd be even better, I think I'll need a laugh when I'm 3000 words deep in this.

Thanks,
C_S.

Hmmm, the only ones I can think of:

Gibson suing everybody for copying their body styles (mainly Ibanez, I think this was in the 1970s).

Behringer's copying of Roland/Boss' stomp boxes (settled out of court I believe).

Mackie suing Sam Ash in the 1990s.

The RIAA is full of lawsuits. They seem to sue for a living instead of record music for a living. The whole peer-to-peer revolution has sparked hundreds of lawsuits by the RIAA it seems.

Thanks for the tips tad. I found a mackie - behringer lawsuit thats pretty swell with a lot of info. Mackie sued behringer for infringement of copyright of design (or something lol). Court ruled in favour of behringer! haha.

ya know... I'm just waiting for the RIAA to get nailed for conversion... they almost _have_ to be collecting money on music they don't represent...

CS, I think most everything out of the RIAA is amusing if you are indeed looking for something funny.

recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/ is a great blog to visit for all the cases filed, pending, in process and being dropped. I can't imagine the legal fees being racked up by these extortionists at the RIAA.

Behringer also had that lawsuit to do with the FCC.

The Verve getting sued by the Rolling Stones for copywrite infringement.

hmmm, must be more but I can't think of any others right now.

Gibson only just relented on PRS making their single cutaway...

I haven't done any research at all on this, but what about the disappearance of TAB music from the interweb?
The ban on cover songs played by live bands (at least here...)?

Price being sued by a retailer for giving away copies of his new album?
Hell, there's a thesis just on Prince's legal wrangling....

Yeah, prince, change your name so you can make music out of contract.

That's a legal boondoggle if ever there was one. Seems he's pulled it off though, so there you go.

The RIAA stuff should keep you busy for quite awhile, i'd think. There's tons of stuff bouncing around in that arena.

Regarding the tab sites; I've only heard that they were applying pressure to have the sites taken down but I don't think I've heard about anyone being sued. Has their been any lawsuits or is it just a big scare?

I have gotten a lot of tabs recently in my effort to get back into playing more and learning some new stuff, I have found some google results give the ol "we have been forced to remove this content" message, but there are still LOADS of them up and running.

Yes I think a lot of the sites are coming back. I haven't really heard anything in awhile though so I'm wondering if the whole thing has been squashed to some degree.

It seems like the RIAA as a whole has kinda lost a lot of steam, they are starting loose a lot, get some smackdown and stuff...I think everybody, including the judicial system, is just very, very tired of them.

Which is great. I mean, I am all for copyright and intellectual property protection, but jeezuz!

Hey, that tab idea is great. I'm going to do a bit of digging, see if I can't find some law suits.

If it helps I think it was the MPA that was trying to take down the tab sites not the RIAA although IMO both are evil.

CS, here's a reference that I grabbed while surfin'

My site www.TabRocket.com was closed by lawers two months ago. It was MPAA that was behind the whole thing. :/

I thought of that herb! haha. Unfortunately it has to involve intellectual property, not pulling a gun on somebody.

Cheers BH, I'll check it out now.

I must agree on the 99 issue. 75? Well maybe, if, um, well maybe.

CS, I think the boys have got it covered pretty good. I got nothing to add.
