I'm Flying to New Zealand next week and i HATE Flying.
Got me thinking about the odds of eating it in mess of burning metal.
Turns out it's only a little over 5000-1 (Lifetime).
Interesting (scary) graph!
Watching Air crash Investigation isn't helping either.

Aug 29, 2007 12:00 pm I hate flying as well...but I'm guaranteed one more thing to go wrong during a flight before my plane crashes...
I've had:
1. struck by lightning
2. bird in the engine
3. one of those 'low pressure air pockets'
4. drunk passenger
5. fire (was still on the ground though)
6. a bomb (well... thats the impression we got from all the guys running around with machine guns)
7. had a ground vehicle collide with the plane once...
8 oh and Moscow wanted us to sleep on the tarmac because our flight arrived after customs closed...
so... something still has to fall off the plane... once that happens I'll never fly again.

OMG I hate that...I flew to Phoenix last year with the family and during descent we had a huge sudden drop, I was freaked when my 9 year old looks at me and said "That was fun, why did everybody gasp?". I looked at her and said "Daddy ain't feelin' too hot right now, I'll tell you later"...
I hate flying.

Aug 29, 2007 01:25 pm Its not so much the flying, its the airports that I hate. Stupid useless security measures take up 2 hours of travel time per leg of flight, routine invasions of privacy that don't really protect anybody from anything, silly rules and regulations, etc. Drives me nuts.
The only time I get nervous in flight is when I start to wonder how an aircraft that was probably manufactured in the 1960s or 1970 is still holding up, what with metal fatigue and all. I wouldn't drive on the highway in a car that old, so I get a little nervous when I fly in a plane that old. And most of them are that old
Aug 29, 2007 01:32 pm Actually, it the older planes that I would RATHER be flying on, they are the work horses that were built with quality. If you look at the stats, it's the newer planes that crash. The ones made of lighter material, new alloys and other various things. The old ones still fly and are solid.
I have a hard time bitching about security measures, even if frivolous. But then, if I was like a friend of mine that flies all the time, I'd likely be more pissed about it. Right now I am just glad there are some.
What we should do is have the national guard do security, and get rid of these minimum wage fed employees that don't give a crap. Get military in there that don't give a crap.

Aug 29, 2007 01:37 pm Only really had one close call... if you can even call it that.
We were ready for takeoff and during the last pre-flight check (while we were on the runway) a aerelon <sp> ceased up. They had to tow us back to the gate.
I have seen some stupid stuff though. While waiting to board our plan some jackass decided to open the rear door and it deployed the slide. We were delayed for about 2 hours while they repacked it.
Flying sucks.
