i need a new mic just for vocals only (hip hop)

shure ksm27 studio condenser, or akg perception 200/ or 400?

the shure and the perception 400 are both $300, and the perception 200 is $159.

what is the best deal here?

I would say the ksm27 and the AKG 400 are going to give you close to the same quality, although the AGK400 does give you a 12db per octave bass roll-off, switchable 10db pad, and three pattern switches (omni / cardiod / figure 8).

that's what would make my decision...then again, if you're ONLY going to EVER record vocals....multi-pattern isn't all that useful. but the bass roll off is.

I think we been through this already haven't we? It's up to you to decide. The input is only to help you. I usually look up the ratings and reviews on items I'm undecided about. One other thing to remember is that if you ever decide to record a live performance, the patterns on the AKG400 will be good to have.

Ya, that's the rub. It's difficult to own every mic out there to do an honest comparison. And then there's taste, then there's what works good under certain circumstances.....

Even the mags that do reviews don't have the time to really put a mic through real paces. Then there's the politics of keeping their sponsers etc.

Difficult to give precise advice when it comes to art.

if you can (read: go to the super-hause music store that has both for you to try) and see for yourself which works best for you.

for vocal mic's, they can be as unique as the individual singin' into it...

what i have learned is go for the opposite sound of the vocalist in question....if he/she is 'nasal' sounding, go for the mic that dosn't exaggerate the mid range, or if it's a deep voice, grab the 'thin' sounding mic. if it's a chick squeelin' like a dolphin, DO NOT go for your 'bright' mic.... i think you get my point.

The KSM 27 has roll off and pad as well....

I'd go for the Shure from my experience.

Actually you normally can't return microphones once you purchase them. Most places won't allow returns on anything that you put your mouth on or near. That includes microphones, talk boxes, pop filters, even earplugs, etc.
