hi everyone, this is my first post. Anyway I have a portastudio 414mkII and was wondering if this thing has mic preamps on the 4 channels. Is that what the trim is controlling? Also if I were to get a mic preamp would it increase sound quality? Right now I have a sm57 recording guitar cabs. The sound seems a bit lacking in quality. Is this the nature of these tapes or am I missing vital piece of gear. THANKS

Aug 06, 2007 11:12 am It does not say it has preamps in any info I found, however I read a few user reviews that say they plug mics right into the unit and record.
Given that it has a "mic input" selection, that it does actually have a preamp, it's likely just the bare minimum the device needs to record mics...very low quality in terms of real preamps. it will, I presume, only record dynamic mics, not condensors as there is no mention of phantom power.
Aug 06, 2007 11:44 am yeah, the mike preamps in those are real crap. you could buy one that plugs in. they do have them though, and xlr jacks on the back as far as i'm aware, although you can only use i xlr per bus, at least on mine. tape is also going to have a fair amount of hiss no matter what you do, same w/amps. hope this is helpful.
peace.

Aug 06, 2007 09:51 pm Ya, if you looking for a good budget little pre amp to get by with try the M-Audio Audio Buddy. It can do both XLR and 1/4 balanced or unbalanced. And there are two channels so you can use two mics at once with it. And the price is right.
