If I buy a new computer, and have a mackie onyx 1620 board w/the optional firewire card... Is anything even going to the p.c.'s sound card, is it even being used? If yes, then what are the benefits of buying a higher end sound card...

I admittedly know nothing about this Mackie unit, but from what I read at zZounds it would seem that your sound interface would be the Mackie, no other device needed...

Yep, the Onyx is a mixer/audio interface. They are so far a pretty good unit without too many problems being discussed about them.

Just to add, higher end soundcards / audio interface / recording cards, will give you a few performance boosts:

lower latency - the signal travels faster through the soundcard, and computer, back to your ears.

better A/D - D/A conversion - the digital signal has to be created from the analog signal (what you can hear). This conversion is done in the AD circuitry. This circuitry is better on higher-end cards, so the digital version of your signal will be better.

more inputs - this may not always be the case, but usually you need to move up to recording cards to get more than 2 inputs. Although I think the SB has a few cards that can do more than 2.

preamps - in most recording cards that have preamps (or mixers with preamps), the preamp will be much better than the one in your onboard sound card, or consumer gaming card. preamp circuitry ain't cheap, so low-budget cards won't put in anything decent, to keep the cost down.

Better software - this is debatable, but often the software and drivers can do much better routing and control than what you get with cheaper cards.

So I could have absolutly NO SOUNDCARD in the P.C. what-so-ever, basically the mackie board w/ firewire interface IS the soundcard...
