Cascade Fat Head or Fat Head II????????

The Cascade Fat Head, I have been looking into getting a pair of these microphones for a few weeks. I have read a lot of good things about them on recording forums and in mix mags. The only thing I can't figure out is what the difference is between the Fat Head, and the Fat Head II......besides the fact that the Fat Head is shorter than the Fat Head II and you can get a Fat Head II in a stylish black finish....... Can anyone offer me any counsel for this puzzling encumbrance?

A heavy duty shock mount, slightly larger body and polished nickel grill are about all you get. It is the exact same mic otherwise and sound identical for both mic's.

So no, you are not missing something at all. They are essentially the same mic.

I'm glad this came up. Are the upgraded transformers really worth the money? Or could I get away with the stock ones and be happy knowing I didn't spend the extra dough.

Thats the next question I had.... From what I understand, these mics are made in the USA with mostly Chinese components. Are the Lundahl transformers better than the cheaper, Chinese transformers?

I'm sure they're better, but is it something that we'd notice?

I am not sure. By reading the frequency response diagrams, the 1/3 octave specs seem like the stock transformer and the Lundahl are practically the same. I think I am gonna get a pair of Fat Heads. The polar pattern seems to be more of a true figure eight than the Fat Head II. Keep your eyes open and I will let you know what I thought about em.

Are you gonna go with the regular ones? No upgraded transformers? Let us know! Looking forward to the result, I bet they'll be awesome.

The only way the upgraded transformers will make any apparent difference is if you have an extremely high end pre amp in place. Otherwise you will never notice the difference. I have had the experience a couple of time with different mic's and replacing transformers.

I called the Cacade guy, I guess he is the owner of the company, and that was pretty much exactly what he said. I think I am gonna get the Fat Head II with the stock transformer, I will let ya'll know what I think.

Hello Switchblade. I was wondering if you had any opinions solidified in regards to the Cascade Fathead 2 ribbon you were considering buying. Did end up buying one?

If your interested in a great ribbon at a killer price have a look at Karma Audio and their K6. I have one coming on the 20th and am looking forward to it after working with a couple of their other mic's. They are building some absolute killer mic's at a price even a moderate project studio can afford.

The K6 is on the front page and in the products section which will give you more detail. You can also see a review of their K-Micro line in the reviews section here.

Bit of a bump from a lurker/occasional poster - I've been eying a Fat Head II mostly for an alternative to the pair of AKG C1000s's I've been using for tracking acoustics. I'd been looking at reasonably affordable large diaphram condensors until someone recommended I check this mic out, and for the price, well, if it's even a reasonably good ribbon, then it's a steal.

So... Switchblade, I'm just wondering if you're recieved your mic yet and if you could post up a couple thoughts and impressions. Thanks! :D

You might want to have a look at the Karma K6 I mentioned above. I have used it on an acoustic and love it. I have used it with another condenser for a dual set up as well as electro acoustic pickup with the K6 and the sound is very full. It is also a wonderful vocal mic among other things. They do them in matched pairs as well.
