I've recorded this song on Sonar5, exported it as a wave, converted it to MP3 format with 128kbps @ 44.1 KHz. It has a Windows Media Icon, but it reads as (Type:MP3 Format Sound). I never had a problem before with uploading these MP3s to 'My Space' or my own website, so why is not letting me do that here?

Jul 20, 2007 12:25 pm I am currently working on security around uploads, right now it will not let a file go up if it does not have a MIME type...it should be audio/mp3, audio/mpeg or something of that nature. The error message you are getting is like showing no MIME at all. A few people are having the problem.
I am trying to find another solution currently...that will allow uploads but still allow me to make sure they are valid mp3's, not some virus ridden executable or a shell script or something with an mp3 extension...

Jul 20, 2007 12:52 pm I understand, better safe than sorry. Any info on how I can make my file a MIME type?

Jul 20, 2007 12:53 pm I had the same problem yesterday, reporting it had no MIME and was rejected (multiple times). I don't even knw what a MIME is, all I know is these are real mp3's.
Hopefully you'll find a way around this yet be able to keep the site secure.
Jul 20, 2007 01:24 pm your files all have them, the problem is your browser isn't sending them along with the request...a file association issue, maybe some sort of firewall or paranioaware sort of privacy thing keeping it, I dunno, I am looking into it tho, hopefully have a solution this weekend.

Jul 20, 2007 09:13 pm Tommy, the reason you are seeing the Win Media Icon is that the Win Media player is the default player for mp3 and wma and possibly other audio/video formats. Windows can show that or not show that if you choose to display certain things in your file browser. I susally turn all that crap off and let it just show me the normal extension.

Jul 21, 2007 08:05 am So where would I find my file browser? Is it in the control panel? I tried looking through my security stuff for the internet, but I can't seem to find anything to turn on or off for the MP3 with the MIME to go through.

Jul 21, 2007 11:25 am You can set some of the preferences in the folder options which is in the control panel. Things like how its viewed and such.
But if you open Windows Explorer and set the view to detials in the view tab then go to the tools/folder optoins and click the view tab there you will see a button to make all folders the same as that.
You must set it to show all extensions though or you won't see the .mp3 or .exe and the like in the list of files.

Jul 21, 2007 07:41 pm My folders show all the extensions.
Jul 21, 2007 09:35 pm whether or not windows exploder shows them has zero to do with it, it's all the browser doing the uploading...I'll Google on this a little and try to find a solution after I get out and fertilize the lawn...

Jul 21, 2007 10:06 pm Db, you should never trust the mime type. That can be spoofed relatively easily.
The only way to truly validate an mp3 file is to loop through part of it and check that it represents a valid mp3 pattern.
If you go to sourceforge.net/project/s...ackage_id=50965 there's a script package that allows you to extract the id3 tags from various media files. If you look through modules.audio.mp3.php, you can see how mp3s are validated.
Jul 21, 2007 10:13 pm Yeah, I know they can be spoofed, lots of things can be spoofed, that's why I am doing multiple checks against files. It's not a matter of "trusting" it, it's a matter of being another qualifier, I try to use multiple layers of checks to validate file uploads.
I will look in to this package too, I was searching for something like this. Thanks for the heads up.
The last validation I had worked great and did just what this one does, but it seemed to get outdated because more and more people were having problems with it.
Jul 21, 2007 11:05 pm Looks like that script was the magic touch. I was previously using mphp or something like that, it had trouble with too many different encoding types over time. This one seems to work pretty well...but, I guess I'll let the couple guys that had problems be the judge of that.
Preliminary tests on my part are good tho. Thanks Mike, very cool, glad somebody else had that same kind of project going on.

Jul 21, 2007 11:55 pm You're welcome as always dB.
Good job on that, you integrated that pretty darn quick!
Jul 22, 2007 01:00 am I'm still getting this-
Any uploaded file must be a valid mp3 encoded file your file is not detected as a valid mp3.

Jul 22, 2007 01:15 am It's still not allowing me to upload in the song area. I went to my 'My Space' site to see if it would upload there, and it uploaded there with no problem. the reason for wanting to upload was to let you guys hear what type of quality the songs were that I'm creating, and see if you could give some advice on what I might want to do or use in future recordings. If you want to check it out its on the address below, and it's titled 'Accept The Saviour'. The Haley-West Songs were not mixed by me.

Jul 22, 2007 01:57 am One of you guys put your file someplace else so I can download and try it myself, I am getting sick of this ****...this is just stupid.
Jul 22, 2007 02:28 am OK then, problem duplicated...now I can work on it, thanks.
And sure, had to send a 5 MB file, couldn't send a few K file ;-)
Your file is giving no usable file formatting information...I don't know how I can be expected to accept such an upload...I'll keep looking tho...

Jul 22, 2007 02:38 am I saw that WYD...
Jul 22, 2007 02:50 am OK, this time it might be on HostPC, it seems the max upload size is 2MB on the new server (PHP does that by default) I usually ask him to up it every time I move servers, I forgot this time...
That would explain a bit.
I'll try it again after it's upped.
Damn, I wish I could sleep...
Jul 22, 2007 10:18 am Well, I got a couple hours sleep...then the damn sun came up...but hey, I got your file uploaded, edited and deleted, Herb, it might be fixed...

Jul 22, 2007 01:22 pm Hey it's working! Thanks for your help on this matter dB. I guess that's why you have 'Masters' on the end of your title. I hope this didn't cause you too much trouble, and I hope you get some rest today. Thanks again.
Jul 22, 2007 01:35 pm Yep, Occam's Razor proven true once again...it's usually the simplest reason.
Jul 22, 2007 01:41 pm Awesome, that probnlem has been weighing on me since...since...since we moved servers (mental note to consider that next time). I am happier than anyone that it is solved. Ibatex helped a huge great deal by finding that sourceforge project, the previous one I used got outdated so I had to resort to extension and MIME type checking until I found something better. Mucho thanks to him...

Jul 22, 2007 04:17 pm Have you tried the 'Ground & Pound' technique? Just Kidding!!
Jul 22, 2007 04:21 pm At the gym, yes, with the neighbor, it's getting awful close. I still wish my wife would have dropped her like a bad habit when the nutbag attacked her...of course, my wife not doing it puts us in a better place in court, but big deal...

Im getting the message "your file is not a valid mp3"
I've encoded them using cubase, and uploaded them here before with no probs......what am i doing wrong!??
Sep 06, 2007 06:33 am Give me the exact error message you are getting, I mean word for word exact...so I can find it in the code to see where it gets generated.
And is it in a popup dialog box or actually on the page.

Sep 06, 2007 06:39 am Exact message is:
File type error
Any uploaded file must be a valid mp3 encoded file your file is not detected as a valid mp3.
* File Format:
* Data Format:
It appears in the main window. I get the same message in Firefox and I.E.
Sep 06, 2007 07:22 am You can try it again, if it doesn't work, upload it someplace I can download it and experiment to see why it hates that file.
