It should be noted that the artist pays to register to play...

Any time the artist pays to perform...Ummmmmm, I see red flags.

Yep...I've been sucked in to things like this before. A waste of money, except maybe for the very elite few. Even then, if you have to pay for it then you can pretty much expect to get nothing out of it except for a hole in your pocket where $50 used to be.

Ya, I didn't get to tell you last night, but I checked it out and my first thought was what a con that is.

I'm with you Jim, I have never payed to play at an event. Done several for charity with proceeds going to were they are needed, but I can't see paying to play for achance to be seen.

I don't know about other parts of the world, but here in Michigan that's all there is. You don't have to pay an entry fee, but you never take home a buck if your an origional band. So in essence you pay to play per gas, time, etc. These bars book 3 or 4 bands each night. Each band comes in with a few friends, then leaves after playing. Most of the friends are on a 'guest list' so the bar is the only entity that makes a dime. The larger bars have the bands sell tickets, and the band can play if they sell enough tickets. So, again you pay to play. The bars with sounds systems have their nephew Dufis at the board as he is always too stoned to get a job. Of course Dufis gets paid first out of the door take. Yesterdays gig Dufis never did figure out how to get the stage monitors to work and nine bands played. I really can't blame people for not comming out. The sound is always right up there with nails on a chalk board.

I'd love to dB. I really would. My nephew just moved out there. Quit GM for Honeywell. He couldn't stand the aerogance any longer. We are putting the house up for sale. This last visit with the kids and grandkids pushed us over the edge. Kansas City, here we come. Probably not any time soon as the average home in Michigan takes two years to sell at present. I hope you understand, I really would love to be in the cities, and you and Noise are a great draw, but the kids are a shade stronger of a draw. Also, the music scene there is strong in swing, jazz, and blues. My true love in music. Rock and Roll is fun no doubt, but for whatever reason I have never been able to sink my teeth into it. Maybe because I knew Moses?

I'll get out there yet. It's a shame, but I used to get out that way when a company I worked for contracted a software development company in the cities. But that was quite a few years ago, before I found HRC.

no money to be made playin' live here either....

there's simply too many artists trying to 'be discovered'

most often if it comes out to around $500 bucks or less for the whole band (4 hours of 'bar music' for some or 1 hour of orginals at a 'venue')

setting up and tearing down gets to be a pain in the azz and was a huge turn-off for me....after awhile i just got bored with giggin'....i prefer a free jam at the house or writing/recording my own stuff.

its a $1 per person here and thats relatively solid... generally enough off door to pay for gas and then income is based off merch... usually a 1 hour set... average band plays 1-4 shows a week. Free food and drinks... tow trucks are militant though :P

Wow Zek, you've got it made! Free drinks and food! Here you pay! Half the 'origional venues' here don't have anybody come in besides the bands and friends. It's how they stay in business. Three bands a night get to pretend they are rock stars in front of their friends. If the bars didn't charge the bands they wouldn't sell any drinks.

Yea WYD, Here too. I think it's partly because Michigan has no work anymore. Everybody is a rock star. We've got tons of layed off bolt spinners hacking away at guitars. Another good reason to stay away from the bars. Some of the noises they make are God Awfull!

Here UK is quite good for gigs but the time when you just formed a band and gigs came in has gone. Some have a small door charge and others pay from the nights bar takings so when the till is up you get more gigs.I make an effort to help the venues when bands cancel and have known the bar owners for years.(very handy)On these gigs we often pick up bookings for private functions which are long hours but good pay/free food and drinks.Last month we did one (tarts n vicar's party)with a right 'friendly atmosphere';) they even gave us loads of booze to take away!

Wow, I guess I am lucky to live here...we did it for free if we were opening for a friends band or that sort of thing, but if we were the hired band I generally took home from a few bucks to $100 or so, plus a belly full of beer...

that was prolly a while back, huh db?

It's pretty similar to what walt was mentioning here in SF too, unless you have name recognition. But getting a gig (and I understand why even if it sucks) is all about, how many people can you bring (which means how many friends do you have).

Well, we didn't do that at first, but after being on the scene for a while, and getting to know the bar owners, not making trouble and stuff, they were typically pretty good to us...I would suspect that was normal for the time, we had a few fans and whatnot, but not a huge following...
