Jul 10, 2007 10:43 am I've got a set of bongos that I like. Although I don't play them nearly frequently enough, and I certainly don't find enough excuses to put them in recordings.
Jul 10, 2007 03:58 pm I played for a little while in a really heavy, almost metal-esque band that had two drumsets and three hand drummers. It was a real challenge to record because the band would only do it in the same room, but it had this great dark, heavy, tribal feel to it. It was one of the only times I've played hand drums in a band (I'm usually behind the kit), but it was great... I've only really heard one other band do something similar and they were friends of mine as well. I always wondered why there wasn't more of that.
Anyway, I don't play them much anymore, but I've got a couple sitting around, begging me to find a use for them. Thanks for the reminder.

Jul 10, 2007 05:59 pm yeah I started doing drum circles again recently and rekindled my passion for bonfires and tribal drumming.
Jul 10, 2007 07:34 pm ren fairs and beach drum circles got me into it...
i've got two congas, bongos, a big djembe some african animal skin clay drum (it's broke, and was my favorite rip) and several 'noise makers' like tamborine, shakers, bells and what not
they're GREAT for havin' around the house....you can kick back with friends, grab one and start jamming...bust out an acoustic and you're set.
i toured with a group of poets in florida for awhile, and them hand drums never left the stage (i often got 'stuck' on stage for the whole damn event, but i was playin' bass and we had a sax player with us)... i love them, and i think every kid should have one.

Jul 10, 2007 11:58 pm ren faire was never about the drum circle for me. It was always about the hot chicks walking around and free booze. Burning man is what got me back into them. I've got a dumbek i'm getting alright at. I think we should make a tribal drum circle recording... it would lose a lot of it's passion since we're all so far away and not playing simultaniously... but it could turn out cool.
Jul 11, 2007 04:30 am damn, ren faire's mead is expensive for me! i try to knock off a 6 in the parking lot to save money..lol.
and yeah, drum circle is kinda the wrong thing...it's more like the drum/musical instrument shop jam with about 4 ppl max....if you hang out there long enough, others WILL come...simply follow them when you hear something you like and before you know it ppl start hangin' around...i LOVE it.
the coolest thing about them is the MANY different tones and sounds you can get out of them.....it's way easier (as a non-drummer) for me to be more expressive and sound like i know what the **** i'm dooing than sitting behind a 24 piece drumkit.
also living in a musician saturated area helps.....OH! speaking of, i might be gooin' to Austin!!! for NAMM!......that's a town just callin' to me...i've never been past the mississip.
