Looking for more help with recording

I got some advice from the song "Don't look Back" that I posted, and I tried another recording hoping to put some of that advice to use.I'm using old recordings done a few years ago to learn the software in hopes that when I start tracking again I'll have a fair grip on things. I had to fade it out in a bad way, because it was merging into another song, being that it was a live recording I did the best I could there. This is a Muddy Waters blues cover.

I normalized this, it possibly gave a bit too much punch but its all a learning process. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome.

I guess what I'm looking for is help in knowing if the compression is any better with this recording, I basically added none, and did the sound open up any in this one (last song was said to be a bit mushy).

The sound seems to have more punch on this one. The drums sound a bit tighter as does the bass. The guitar comes through very well on this and the drums don't fade out when it does get louder. You can still hear the tape artifacts, that is not something easily removed though so not to worry there.

I think the vocal part comes forward nicely on this.

And I must say its a good version of the song as well. Nice fade by the way, it works just fine as it is a live recording.

Thanks a bunch for the listen and input. I can't believe ow much I have learned since looking into this site. I didn't even have a clue what the screen was going to look like when I opened the software for recording the 1st time and less about using it. But the help and constructive criticism has been incredible. With help in here I got started, and know I'm pushing to get my set up complete to start some new recordings. Thanks again to all.

Hey, no problem. That is what this site is all about. Glad you are liking it here.

Ya, compression is something that is best used in moderation. If you can hear it working then you are over doing it. Funny how that works isn't it.

There are no magic settings to start with so it is kind of an experiment as you go thing as all music will need a little different treatment with it. But when it comes to using compression on a stereo mix, I am of the mind a little goes a long way. Although there are some fantastic multi-band compressor's out there now that can be cranked up a bit for some real punching of an entire mix they are still best used in moderation as well.
