Reel 2 Reel

My grandparents gave me their old Teac reel to reel machine. I plan on using it to sample. My question is is there a standard fit for the reels to reels or do they differ?

I looked in the manual and couldnt find anything about the size they take. Leaving me to think that all reels are the same size. Any info?

Thanks!

Most common consumer stereo decks are 7", but there are 3", 5" as well that can incidentally be used on a 7" deck as long as the speed is the same (usually 7 1/2" ips) . Pro & Pro-sumer usually can accomadate up to 10" reels and run at 15" - 30" ips.

well, speed dosn't affect what kind of tape you need...all tapes will work at all speeds...

it's the size of the reel and the width of the tape (i'm gonna guess yours is 1/8" like a cassette) that matters.

Most of the smaller reel decks used 1/4" tape. As well so did a good majority of the larger consumer decks.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a small "portable" (read, roughly the size and weight of a suitcase bomb...great for air travel) reel-to-reel that lacks the rubber/plastic stoppers that would otherwise go over the reel once loaded. Is it possible to still buy the things, or could I make one easily enough?

hi i hope anyone can help i might get a akai gx620 and they say the output volume knob is broken off and they dont get very loud sound it looks to me that thats for the headphones as aline from the headphone jack goes to the broken knob. i think im right in that the rca jacks on the back output of the machine does not have anything to do with the knob thats broken if anypne knows lots about this please help me im real shure that the sound works from the back rca jacks going out to the stereo they might have only used a headphone to test the machine and thats why they did not get very good sound. and could you replace the volume control for the headphone real easy like go to radio shack and get a control if the headphone contol is all thats broken then i might get a great machine are the akai gx620's great machines or not i want to know as well thanks for your help

dude im not sure of the machine your talking about but, replacing a knob of just about any kind shouldnt be too much of an issue. just gotta get the exact same one. they usually have a number on the back like for example 25k or 500k or whatever.

for me anyway, i just got me soldering iron and whipped the old out and in wid the new.

ive rewired quite technical guitar wiring just off schematics found on line. if you have a steady hand you'll be just fine with a vol nob.

all i will say is, just dont heat up any area too much or it could kill stuff.
Ie; soldering iron must be hot enough to work almost instantly, ya dont wanna sit on the same spot too long.

look at me carrying on, youre proly like...uh, yeah man i know how to solder hey. oh well hope that helps a smidge.

Well, that machine did only have the one volume control. It controlled both the headphone out as well as the level going to the RCA mains on the back.

But yes, Radio Shack should carry the pot you need. I would remove the current volume pot and bring it with though to make sure you get an exact match.

Its really best to start your own thread about this if you want more attention.

I suggest you start a fresh topic in Gear gab here as well on the need you have.

What type of deck is it?
