This "mic circle thing" is called a 'Pop Shield' (aka a 'Wind Shield' and a 'Popper Stopper'(!)) These things do the lovley task of catching all the spit that singers gob at the microphone when they sing, it also can help reduce the loud 'popping' sounds made when large amounts of air are blown towards the mic.

If you have a condensor then you NEED a pop sheild as Condensor mic's do not like any form of moisture - especially not spit. They're not expensive and are well worth investing in.

Or, you can make your own popless www.dbmasters.net/hrc/new...story&id=35 for about 1/10th of what is charged for one. and it takes all of ten minutes to make.

you can also make the "fuzzy round ball thing" that goes right onto the mic from foam packing material. cut it about 4" deep by 3" by 3" in a square, hollow out the middle, shape the sides a little, slide on to the top of the mic and Voila' you just saved 10 bucks using something that you were going to throw out!

you could proably do the same by wrapping something fabric around the end of the mic presumably...

mine doesnt. if you go to my webpage (members music) you can just about make out the one i made for my mic out of the packing foam from a harddrive. its the dark colored really squishy foam. almost like the "egg shell" white/yellowish foam. "you can pinch it and youre fingers touch" sorta thing. it got rid of deep breath sounds, popping "p's" and the dreaded slicing "S" in my vocals (and no spit on the condenser.) the mic by the way is a sm-57

Ahhh - it was the last line that gave it away.

No offense, but the difference in quality between a dynamic and a condensor mic is immense - trust me, you'd notice the difference if you wrapped one of those bad-boys round a condensor...

which is why you never see wind shields put on condensors...wind shields are for live performances, not studio use. Popless units are more useful in a studio setting.

Also, remember. A coat hanger and a pair of cheap pantyhose work's great.
