im looking at purchasing the MOTU 8pre...which is a firewire unit that also has 8 mic preamps in it as well...the signal chain looks like this....
microphone > snake > MOTU 8pre > Computer
where in this chain could i place a compressor...and how? i obviously cant use a patchbay because the snake is XLR...any ideas?

May 23, 2007 07:38 pm this probably isn't the best way to do it, but you could go mic, snake, compressor, motu, computer.
You don't have a mixer you can use an insert point on?
May 23, 2007 07:43 pm well, no, im gonna try that whole mixerless studio thing...haha, i know people do it, thats why it's frustrating...i dont get it. if anything, id use my focusrite preamps...and they dont have inserts on them either. this is very confusing. it kind of makes the MOTU 8pre look like a bad idea...

May 24, 2007 04:26 am well we just need to figure out proper routing is all. I only use a mixer in my studio to connect my stereo to my computer to use as monitors since i broke mine. Other than that, my signal chain is:
Mic -> Preamp -> Compressor -> EQ -> Outboard Effects if I use em -> Computer
going in. Going out sometimes it's:
Computer -> Preamp for warmth -> Compressor
if it's the whole mix, individual tracks may just go out to the eq and compressor as needed. Of course, it's not reccomended to go out of the digital domain once you're in.... but i'm a rebel.
The only thing is you want your signal chain to be as short as possible, but I don't see any way to do this without just plugging the compressor in somewhere in the chain.
May 24, 2007 11:03 am what i was hoping for was a simple patchbay set up.
mic > XLR snake > XLR to TRS cable > TRS patchbay > MOTU 8pre <firewire> NUENDO
but the inherent problem is phantom power...
id really like TO NOT have to unplug things behind the rack to plug in compressors and such, which is why id like to run a simple patchbay setup which is impossible, being that the MOTU has no insert points

May 24, 2007 12:14 pm This is the closest I can find from MOTU themselves about the 8Pre:
www.motu.com/techsupport/...sor-with-cuemix
But that's more ideal for send-type effects that you want to blend. Maybe it'd work if you only used the wet signal.
Remember that mixing any dry signal with the compressed signal will defeat the compression, so when using compression as a send effect, always use a 100% wet signal. Even then, I can't guarantee that it'll work. That's why they make channel inserts :)
May 24, 2007 12:35 pm hmmm....that is interesting...that may work, although there are only two outputs on the 8pre...a monitor out...a headphone out...this is no fun...cause the specs look outstanding on this thing, but its pointless if i cant even use compression
May 24, 2007 03:24 pm i skipped some replys, but i read you have a focusrite pre....i'd go mic to the focusrite to compressor to motu (bypass the pre by setting the gain to 0db).

May 24, 2007 10:19 pm By using the focusrite in there he will just be adding more noise in the signal chain.

May 25, 2007 10:24 pm OUCH!
May 26, 2007 11:46 am The only compression I know how to do is when I record a track in acid pro 6, I can then click the add fx button and scroll through my pug ins and select track compressor, then tweak it or select a preset.
Anyone think this is a bad or good idea?

May 28, 2007 06:20 pm but i like outboard compression...to tame some levels on the way in...ya know?
