im thinking about buying guitar combos. its supposedly easy to use and its made by native instruments so i assume its good. does anyone use it or have ever used it? i will be mostly recording some heavy distortion but i also want different kinds of good cleans and such. any help or advice is greatly appriciated.

I'm not going to be much help on this. I listened to the demo, and it sounds pretty cool...

Have you tried any of the FreeAmp products? Free VST's. They are pretty cool.
I'm really growing fond of my little Digitech RP150 these days...The X-Edit software is wonderful.

I also have a Sans-Amp Tri-AC - and that thing rocks.

I have a copy (from a free review copy I was sent).

It's fine, I'm really not a fan of amp sim plugins, prefering to record the wet sound from my Line6 Toneport.

Having tried a few I would say it's not as good as the Line6 or Guitar Rig products but it's good for the price.

Truth be told the Free Amp / Fretted Synth stuff www.frettedsynth.com/ is just as good and it's free.

I've found the free amp 2 to be very good as well, though I was a little put off by tails of some of the patches.

for instance, the reverb tails, or just the distortion fading away, would get pretty weird sounding. I'm sure it can be overcome, but it is something to watch for.

www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=488 is a pretty decent software amp sim. One of the better ones I have found.

I've been trying various amp sims lately and considering the price (free) FreeAmp 2, is one of the best, but the noise gate in it is really bad, better to use a separate gate plugin for those patches that are noisey. I haven't tried Guitar Combo's, but considering is uses the same tech, just fewer bells & whistles as GR I'd expect it to be above average.
I've tried Revalver, & Amplitube along with a couple others not even worth mentioning.
But when you compare them side by side with Guitar Rig 2 the rest IMO don't even come close with the possible exception of Amplitube 2. Best thing to do is like I did, start downloading demo's and see which one you prefer and fits your budget.
