ribbon mics

does anyone have much experience with ribbon mics, what are they used for?

I've never had the privalage of using a ribbon mic, but I do know a bit about them. They were very popular around the 1940's before Condensor mic's became widespread and mass produced. They do not require phantom powering, but as a result, they have a lower output signal (and thus more noise can easily be introduced when recording with them).

They are typically considered to have a "warm" sound.

Hey man, I've got a bit of Info on ribbon mics but I've got to dig it up. I'll try to have it to you by tommorow though.

They are very beutiful sounding piece of gear. but on the other hand, they are not cheap and are very delicate. They do not take misshandling well, and are not meant to be screamed into or used for anything but ambiance or vocal's. Royer is one of the bigger name's now in Ribbon mic's. And they have a very good product.
