M-Audio 2496 if you can help an idiot I'd be graeful

I bought the above soundcard for MIDI in.

I have installed it as per the instructions. Thing is, I can't coax anything out of it soundwise and am still having to use the latency-ridden Realtek onboard soundcard.

I have a "normal" set up, Windows XP PC with nothing fancy, no external gear other than a midi keyboard.

The moment I go into the windows control panel and change the sound playback default device to the 2496, i get silence. Even music played through WMP doesn't come through - if I look at the 2496's monitor mixer, I can see that it is getting a signal (from/to mixer input WavOut 1/2).

So signals are clearly getting TO the card but not OUT of it.

Can anyone give me advice? Am I missing something?

P.S. I know this post doesn't fill in a lot of the details, but I didn't want to swamp it with irelevent info.

try the different "monitor" settings...I usually used "monitor mixer" or something like that...I forget the phrases their control panel used...

Check out the M-Audio mixer and make sure the levels are not muted. By default (at least on my cards) all outputs were set to mute.

Not to be a jerk, but what are you listening on?

the realtek card probably can drive speakers, whereas the 2496 can not. It only puts out line level signal, which would be very difficult to hear with passive speakers.

Be sure you have some version of amplifier to bump up your output signal to listening levels.

The problem is the documentation doesn't explain anything very well to the relative novice.

Whats the difference between Delta AP Multi setting and Delta AP 1/2?

This is taken from their support site:

Q: I can't get any sound from my Delta card. What's wrong?

A: Please make sure you connect your (amplified) speakers to Output 1/2 of your Delta card.

>>> My speakers won't fit the jacks, nor will my headphones. Are they telling me I need to replace these? I don't think so, it doesn't mention that in the manual.. At the moment they're plugged into the onboard soundcard <<<

If you still don't get any sound, open the Delta control panel and check if you see levels in the Monitor Mixer - depending on your Delta card model, you may have to scroll to the right to see all Input and Output channels. If you see level meters, switch to the "Hardware Settings" tab and activate "Monitor Mixer" in the left column (H/W Out 1/2).

>>> Gee thanks but the monitor mixer in H/W Out 1/2 is in the Patchbay/Router tab. Great help guys. <<<

Then go back to the "Monitor Mixer" tab and remove mute and solo checkmarks on all mixer channels. Now raise all the volume faders until you get sound.

>>> Still nothing - any more advice? No??? That was it? ? ?? ?????

It amazes me that the support pages run by these companies is so poor. I know there is an easy "kick yourself" answer to this, I just know there is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So how do I use my current headphones etc if they have to be attached to a soundcard via a jack that doesn't fit? That's gotta be wrong, hasn't it?

I'm listening on the speakers / headphones that came with the PC (speakers are plugged into an amplifier which also came with the PC, the amplifier is plugged into the existing onboard card. The lead won't fit the soundcard jack.

I hate to look stupid but I really didn't think I'd have to change my equipment.

This card is also marketed at people who play games and that, are they supposed to go out and buy new gear? The manual doesn't say that. It just says, plug this in, install it and you're ready to go.

Thanks for everyones input so far, I sound grumpy and whingy but I am grateful, believe me.

You will need the output of your 2496 to go to a mixer or headphone amp. You can't connect your headphones directly to the 2496 even if you had the correct connectors as there is no amplification coming from the 2496. Another thing is that the outputs are mono (1 channel). Do you have a mixer?

Something else form deeper within the support site:

Note: If your computer speakers were intended for consumer use, they were likely designed to be connected to an RCA (phono-plug) or 1/8” stereo output jack. However, many devices designed for professional recording situations have larger ΒΌ” output jacks. If you wish to use your consumer PC speakers with your new M-Audio soundcard/audio interface, you may need to purchase an appropriate audio adaptor from your local electronics store, depending on which M-Audio product you are using.

>> It would have been nice if that had been in the "troubleshooting" part of the manual <<

Well I guess the answer is blowing in the wind.

Many many thanks to you guys, I'm off to buy an adapter tomorrow.

There's your first stopper. Make sure they're amplified in some fashion, and get them plugged in correctly, then move on to the next step.

Kinda makes sense that if your speakers are plugged into the wrong soundcard, you won't hear anything.

I remember when I was techning a lady was angry her speakers didn't work...only to find out she plugged them into the modem, not the sound card.

< angry lady voice >

how come I get a shock everytime the phone rings?

< /voice>

My mom did the same thing. Her headphone was plugged into something stupid, and she was hearing the music coming out of the onboard speaker (compaq), thinking it was from the headphones. I plugged it in correctly, and she didn't even really care.
