mac vs pc

i don't know what to do! i might get a laptop. i was gonna get a mac. now i'm having second thoughts.

maybe it would be fun for someone in the know to list the reasons mac sucks. all i ever hear from mac users is that they're really happy. but i don't know what kind of people they are, what their needs are, etc.

my pc-using friend today said he used his gf's mac recently and to him it seemed like a fisher price computer. that was interesting. i somehow knew exactly what he meant, and i had never thought of it that way before!

I've spent quite a bit of time on windows, Mac, and Linux.

I stuck with linux... but I bounce around to whatever accomplishes what I want more convieniently.

Macs generally don't break... but when it does you are SOL... unless you have applecare... and then it 'doesn't suck as bad'.

Some examples of mac breaking... well... the common firewire issue... I burned up an iBook G4...main board was toast...as going to be $600 for _parts_ to fix it... we had 2 weeks left on applecare... sent it to the local store and it took two weeks to fix it... which shut down ours production for two weeks...

I crashed iMovie about 3 times a month...granted I was being farilly intensive with it... Windows Movie Makers has never crashed on me.

The customer support sucks... they're idiots... MS customer supprt is idiots also... but there's more places to get the RIGHT answer for windows and linux instead of a call center... I've had Mac applecare give me WRONG answers which would have lost me hundreds of gigs of data if I would have followed their instructions. Online fourms for macs are very slow relativly speaking.

The interface is terrible... IMHO... Aqua is a stripped down Gnome from 10 years ago... the least they could have done is had virtual desktops...the dock is too big and is inefficiant use of screen space. minimizing and reopening windows is cumbersome.

How The **** do you accomplich ANYTHING with only one mouse button?!?! :)

Macs are designed to be the 'perfect' computer... well... you know... White. :)

Macs come with Hitachi HDDs which are ****.

Macs don't come stock with enough RAM to accomplish anything...128MB in an iBook...

Data recovery software is awkward... to retarded... - example of applecare stupidity... they (and by 'they' I mean Level 1 & 2 AND the local Genius) said data recovery on Macs was impossible.... which obviously is wrong...

The amount of RAM on macs doesn't work in the same way as RAM on PCs, 128mb ram is small sure, but wouldn't be as crappy as 128mb ram on a PC.

My old G3 for example had 32mb and let me run 16 tracks with VSTs, no way a PC would allow you that with 32mb RAM. The RAM works in a different way so the values don't correspond PC to mac.

I've had the opposite issues from Zek re: windows movie maker and iMovie, never had iMovie crash, WMM crash a whole lot - and i've been way more intensive with iMovie than with WMM.

You can use a two-button mouse with a mac, and yes, it's more handy to do that.

Personally i like the dock, you don't have to have it there all the time, you can have it pop up when you go to the bottom or side of the screen, you can also massively reduce its size.

All that said,i think mac laptops are way too expensive. Apple have made some great computers (the mac mini is an awesome example of a really decent machine for a small outlay) but bang for buck on their laptops especially isn't great at all.

Mac doesn't suck, forty, I personally don't prefer it cuz I am a big fan of "the devil you know is better than the devil you don't" type of thing. My last job I had a mac and a pc in my office (cube) as well as my job before that, I used both and I just simply like PC's. I consider them easier to use, easier and cheaper to upgrade and get parts for much of the time. I don't know many "gearhead" type Mac guys, they buy a Mac and use it 'til it dies, whereas PC guys are often always changing out parts making it bigger, stronger and faster cuz they can...

Both computers get the job done when it comes to recording, but I have never found a convincing argument yet as to why one is superior than the other. The issue for me that throws the balance scale in PC's favor is price/power and the fact more software works on PC...

I personally have used nothing but PC's since I was 12 years old with my first IBM PCjr. I am partial to the PC. At my wife's office they originally bought all MAC's because the owner was in with a MAC guy and they got really good deals on 30 MAC's in a networked environment. After 7 years of multiple MAC's and the network crashing atleast once a week with a good 5hr downtime each situation, they went with PC's and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

I have a problem with any computer where shoppers say things like "I'll take the purple one"...

There are pros and cons on both sides sides...each has strengths and weaknesses, at the end of the day they both do the job and evangelist's from either side are just that...

Whaddya gonna use the laptop for - that's a big factor in the decision.

Mac might be better for video stuff, Garabgeband is basically free.

For more work and business like apps PC is definitely better.

Zek made a few good points, though they got lost in a rather negative post, support is difficult to get for Apple and replacements parts and repairs are expensive.

It's mostly a religious question more than a fact based one :)

Agreed on the apple parts, such a rip-off. At least peripherals don't have to be all apple now like they used to be. There was a time when it seemed like nothing was apple compatible unless it was made by them and that's no longer true thank god.

Anyway, like i said, despite that i still prefer OS 10.whatever.whogivesacrap to windows XP. - and don't get me started on fista.

a side note on the laptop: I don't know what MacBooks or whatever they're calling them ship with, but make sure you get a 7200 rpm hard drive (lots of times they try to pawn off 4200 and 5400 which you'll lose some performance with). I imagine you'd want the performance if you're recording or doing any video editing and such.

My only regret with my dell laptop is not getting the 7200rpm hard disk... and dual core... but that wasn't out yet, so that's my excuse. =)

[edit] according to apple's website, you cannot get a 7200rpm hard disk on any of their laptops. Pretty crappy for a laptop that costs 2 grand, it's not even an option.

[edit #2] my bad, if you spend $2800 you can get a 7200 rpm in their macbook pro. Forget that junk!

This is really going to show how little I know about Mac but... isn't there only one kind of laptop drive? I'm guessing that PC and Mac drives aren't interchangeable. I've never worked inside the case of a Mac. Is there really anything in there? :)

i think most windows laptops have a replaceable hard drive, like i could change mine out with a 7200rpm... but it entirely depends on the manufacturer though.

have no idea about macs.

yes they're all the same harddrives... it's a different filesystem though...sometimes they come is hard drive carrages which might be sealed... but can be broken into so drives can be changed out... older thinkpades were that way... havn't looked inside much...
