Recording separate tracks with a stereo mix?

It's sounds a ridiculous question, because it's a ridiculous situation. I'm currently recording through a jack to mini jack adaptor through my microphone socket, as amateur as it sounds that is all I can afford at the moment. I'm using Audacity to record onto but some reason when I select 'Microphone' to record from all I get is a recording of whatever goes on on my computer, so when I go to record a second track, as I play along with it it'll add the original track to the recording, which is really annoying as I can't add seperate effects or change volumes etc.. any suggestions? Cheers

Do you have a line in that you can use to send the signal in with, instead of using the mic jack?
What kind of set-up do you have--computer, and sound card. It's not a ridiculous question at all, and I'll bet a lot of people who use this forum did what you are doing when they first started out . . .

Most likely you have the input source on your soundcard/onboard sound set to "What You Hear" or "Wave" (depends on the Sound card) use the Windows mixer and select only the Mic' input.
