Are you planning to record on a PC? Or are you buying some multitracker? If so, analog or digital?

Roland man......heh. Sorry db You knew I was gonna throw that in there.
You might check out the VS line from Roland any one of their MTR's would do the trick for you. As far as eq's they've got some awesome fx in their addon cards. You can find them pretty cheap too if you look around.

The cdx has only 2 tracks simultaenously, if lets say a multitrack has 8 tracks, and it can record 4 tracks simultaenously does that mean i can only plug in 4 mics and record with only 4 mics??? then what are the other 4 tracks for??

www.zzounds.com...z=1583924381920 it says there.. "2 inputs (one XLR and one 1/4 in.)," that means i have to put 2 diff mics??? i cant put two Sm58's?

whats the most inexpensive 8 track simulteanous w/ EQ, fairly acceptable sound multitracker?? what if it has no cd-r how can i put the music in my computer for burning??

ya, i wish i had that, if i get a 8 track digital recorder, monitors, mics (duh), do i still need amps? and for example my multi has no cd-rw but has a HD, how can i upload it to the computer?

if your monitors are sefl powered you don't need an amp, otherwise you will. As far as getting your music from multi-to-PC it totally depends on what other interfaces it has, if it has any USB ports, firewire ports or anything like that.

This is exactly why I prefer recording inot the PC in the first place...

yeah, it looks good and because it doesnt compress the files they should be fine as far a quality goes...if you havent got the right usb plugs or whatever adapter it does use, you can always work the old fasioned way by pluging the line out into the soundcard.

"Its superb digital mixer provides 60mm faders for all 16 channels, 3-band EQ with parametric mid and high, master EQ, channel and master compressors, eight mic inputs, ADAT optical I/O, 2 effect sends and 2 aux sends per channel,"

That oughta cover it!

"8 track simultaneous recording using analogue inputs. 16-track simultaneous recording available using ADAT interface in addition to analog inputs" it says in the vf-160 fostex website, what is ADAT? and can i plug mics in their holes? if not, i only have 8 inputs for mics? NOOOO!

ADAT is a legacy recording device from Alesis. It will do you now good at all. Matter of fact even in it's hey-day it wasn't much good.

ADAT was/is an 8-track digital recording device that records on tape that can be linked together to form bigger recording possibilities. Looked great on paper, I have recorded on them a couple times...sucked...

probably not so you'd notice without listening to the tracks at high volume...thats where the difference will become apparent.

having said that, my soundcard's pretty poor and i still get good results (check out the link in the members music section for some examples)...

it should be usable, unless the card's VERY poor!

the mixer plugs into the recorder - it wont actually record...you can plug the mixer into one input on the recorder itself...thus saving on the ammount of tracks used in total, as its converting several mic inputs into one output

check this out, check out those 6 holes on top? see the two phantom power in the left side? those extra 4 small holes, what are they? if they are mic holes can i plug a SM57 in there?

they're all mic inputs of some sort, the little holes are 1/4 inch jack sockets i would think...the same plug as you get on guitar leads. you can get mic leads with jack plug ends, i use them myself.

Here is the same device at MF (buying there helps support this website) service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear and for a couple hundred dollars more they have an even better one service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Those extra holes are a headphone out, stereo main outs and a footswitch plugin. If you have Adobe Acrobat reader read their online brochure www.fostex.com/Support/pd...20DataSheet.pdf

so i can only put 2 mics in the vf-80? for example i have a 24 input mixer, then i plug it in one of the channels in the vf-80, when i plug lets say 14 mics in the mixer, will it be recorded by the vf-80? its like cheating the inputs? and will it sound clean?

as long as you've mixed it alright, yeah, it'l be fine!

sure you could use all 24 inputs of the mixer, but they would all only record on to 2 tracks in the VF80.

i dont need the other tracks anywayz, cause were gonna record as a band, or just me on the drums . . damn, so i might as well get the boss br-532 service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear the 2 input smartmedia carder... its only around $399.. and w/ the smartmedia i can save it in my pc and burn it, is this mixer good enought ? www.zzounds.com...z=1584863881365 . . as i see it i can put 10 mics in it? correct?

Ya, that mixer is awesome, I have the 1622 from the same series, that is a great line of mixers, but you will want to buy it here if you can in your area, then you help support HRC:

Just to pitch in on the Digital Multi-tracker front.

If you REALLY need another 8 mic inputs then you should consider something similar to the "DigiMAX LT Mic Pre Interface" service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

This device is basically just 8 high quality mic-preamps which output via A-DAT Lightpipe (so that's what the A-DAT in is for, eh? ;) )

Good luck.

fredz, if youre looking to record 8 audio tracks at once, i would suggest getting a mixer with 8 xlr inputs and direct outs on each.

some suggestions are
Alesis studio 24

and hard disk recording:

Please stop putting all the long URL's in that I need to change, just give us a model name, mostof us know what you are talking about.

I would recommend the Delta 1010 before the Layla.M-Audio's driver updating and system compatiblity is generally a lot better than Echo's.

Ihave owned both an Echo card and an M-Audio card and I am far happier with the M-Audio than I ever was with the Echo.

You don't "upload" music with a sound card, you play music into it and record it right on your PC through which ever application you decide to go with. There are many to choose from. Cakewalk is generally accepted as a very user-friendly app that is easy to learn.

As far as EQing you can do that on the PC or anywhere in the signal chain going to the PC.

Idle curiosity, have you paged through our recording tips section? Look under the Computer Based Studio section as there will be many articles that will probably answer a lot of your questions.
