Which Msconfig services to disable?

I'm trying for the third time to get my HP Pavilion recording computer to work properly. It came with Media Center, which I replaced with XP Pro, but still would get freezes/crashes in Sonar, even with a barebones project. So after thorough testing of the hard drive (which revealed no problems), I'm trying to start from scratch again with a new XP install.

I want to make sure that none of the tweaks I'm doing is causing a problem. I use the tweak list from MusicXP.net, and have done most of their recommendations (except disabling System Restore, wallpaper, and screensaver). Now I'm at the point of disabling items in the msconfig Services window.

Some people say hide all Microsoft services and disable everything else, and others say uncheck everything. I would expect Microsoft's services to be the most intrusive, so the first choice doesn't seem like the right one. Before I do this, I wonder if any of you know specifically which items here must be enabled for Windows, and audio apps, to run properly. This is not an internet/networking computer. Besides the soundcard drivers and the ones marked "essential", which things should I leave active?

Thanks!

isn't msconfig still broken? M$ told me they weren't going to fix it. It also requires a reboot...

it's better to use services.msc ...no reboot needed...

look for winaso program. I bought it for the office and it works well. registry defrag and clean up- and start up config- with a little button for "required files" I have about a dozen laptops that go out on travel with people and they always came back with issues- this worked out some of the kinks a little faster.

hmm, what's broken? I've used this for years, and it always seemed to do what I told it.

Any more info?

Also, just tried the services.msc. Cool. I've not seen that one before. I'll have to look into this more.

Thanks, will check out the other thread.
I asked this same question at Gearslutz, and got a link to a very thorough guide to Windows services, which recommends the alternate methods to using msconfig. I'm going to try it, can't get any worse results than I've already gotten.

www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

He also recommends disabling System Restore as his FIRST step. I'm a little hesitant, since I've had to use it a couple of times recently due to problems from driver updates & Windows patches.

If you didn't have System Restore as an option, what is another good way to undo changes/mistakes?

Thanks for the tips.

msconfig messed up the 'authentic windows stuff' so XP required activation each time you changed it... which meant you had to call M$ tech support after three times for them to reauthenticate you manually... pain in the freak'n ***...
