Griffin iTalk

I was looking for a little recording device to set out by the sound board during gigs and practices and stuff,m just to hear how bad we really do suck. I didn't really need anything with super high sound quality, just something that would reveal to me the ugly truth.

Someone suggested I take a look at the iTalk by Griffin, which essentially turn my video iPod into a little recorder. I took his advice and got one on eBay, and so far I really like it. Works really slick, and interfaces well with iTunes. The sound quality isn't that great, but good enough for songwriting ideas or recording band practices. Here's a little snippet of me and my guitar (raw audio...no processing...you've been warned):

The only thing I'm having trouble with is that when I import the file into GarageBand for a little processing (like adding some reverb to hide the flat notes) everything is sped up to where I sound like The Chipmunks. Any ideas?

that's what i've been using for a couple of years. it's perfect! do you have the ipod video or an aolder ipod? the italks for the ipod videos record in stereo at a good bit rate.

I have the video iPod...I was getting some drop-outs and things so I went to the lower bit rate, and now no drop outs, but just The Chimunk voice. (And I ONLY get that voice in GarageBand...nowhere else)

I like that you can even plug in an external microphone if you want. Have you tried that?

no. im not even sure if the old italk that i use (with my old ipod) has a mic input. if it did, tho, i wouldnt want to use it, because i use the italk solely as a little handheld riff recorder. just to save ideas for me to actually play around with later.

Yeah, I agree...that's all I'll mostly use it for too. but I wonder if I could run a direct out from the mixing board into that microphone input, or would that blow the whole thing up?

It would be pretty sweet to get a direct recording of gigs without all the drunk people yelling, "Hey...you guys suck!!"

If they're yelling that Jim, you're obviously not playing enough Free Bird.

hey thats a good idea. you should try that! please try it and let me know if it works! the worst that could happen is you'll destroy the universe.

Or possibly get us all sucked into another dimension. :-)

Anyway, it does not sound half bad at all Jim. Sounds like it picks up pretty well in fact.

The chipmunk thing might be that GarageBand doesn't handle changing the bit and sample rate like other apps might.
