First Gig....

So I'm recording my first band tonight......
I am very nervous.
Would all of the good people here wish me luck??

It's going to be a straight "live" deal, strictly for demo purposes. I'm taking my stuff to *them* which means I'll have limited control over the environment.
Hopefully I don't suck.
Good thing is I'm doing it free, so that takes a little heat off. Hopefully, if it goes well, these guys will throw my name at some of their friends.

Here they are with their home recorded stuff, if anyone wants to give a listen...

Once again, wish me luck! I feel like a babe about to go wandering into the woods.

I just listened to the link, and was going to say something snide, but instead I'll just say Good Luck Old Bean!

And take some Dramamine with you.

Its hard to write tunes with one or two chords. The bass player's gonna get a sore finger with that sliding riff though;)Good luck on recording the gig.

Well, that turned out pretty crappy, but I learned a lot, I think. Well, maybe not "crappy", but not as well as I'd hoped. Recording live is pretty darn tough.
Funny thing, the band actually liked it!
I'll be recording them again in another two weeks. With some minor rearrangements. The song those guys put up doesn't do them justice. Actually, the girl that plays bass is quite talented and very solid. If she weren't married to the singer/guitar player, I'd steal her for my OWN band, he-he.
Back to mixing..

Chicks playing bass rock. She sounds angry when she is singing though.

Hope all went well for you.

JF, I almost used that picture for my avatar. Nice to see someone putting it to good use. I gotta stop leaving photos of myself on the Internet for everyone to grab!

Yeah, first attempts don't seem to go as planned. Oh well, now you got that first one out of the way =), all the rest should be better.

I think the tone is pretty good for the raw sound they got going. Has an air of punk to it. I'd be happy for a free demo :)

D'oh!

Sorry for the miscommunication, guys, the MySpace link I put up was of their OWN recordings. Not the ones I did last weekend....
Mine actually do sound *somewhat* better than that!
Once I get some mixing done, I'll put up a few things for you guys to critique.

Okay, I put something up in my profile. If any of you guys get a minute, check it out and give me your thoughts on the mix.
Remember this was a one room, live recording with minimal isolation.......YAY. No overdubbing, no DI, etc...

I think its got too much high end, myself, but I've listened so much my ears are going batty.

Anyhoo, feel free to rip it apart. This was a learning experience for me!

Did you add any reverb to it at all, or is that ALL live-room going on there ? If it's all live-room, then my guess they were playing really loud, as there seems to be a slight bit of phasing poing on from the reflections... makes for a somewhat thinner sound... might be what you're considering to be more high end to deal with in the mix .

Not too bad for a first time out . : )

Edit: 2nd listen, the guitar sound is pretty dang sweet ! Most of the room sound seems to be coming from the vox or drum mics .

Hey, thanks for the listen, Hue!
Yeah, I was worried about phasing, but I'm still new enough to not know how to really deal with it. Everything *always* sounds kind of thin to me, and I'm never sure if it's phasing, or the crappy preamps in my recorder. (or just inexperience)
As far as verb, the only thing I've got going is on the vox. The guy pretty much requested a deep verb....
The drums were right in front of the living room windows, so it was reflection city there. No cymbal mics at all, just catching them through the tom mics. The drummer is one of those guys that lays into the cymbals like a madman, but touchy-feelies the toms by comparison. I've had a heck of a time trying to tame the cymbals.

Once again, thanks for the listen, Hue. You pretty much backed up everything I was thinking and I appreciate the input.
