music review sites?

i need a good site that'll keep me up to date on upcoming rock, metal, and underground rock/metal/experimental releases. pitchfork is indy for the most part. they've got a poor attitude, writing off any music which doesn't fit with their extraordinarily narrow definition of 'cool.'

anyone have any sites?

oops. changed the post title. that one site i mentioned there is pretty much the one i've been visiting, but they're really tough to handle sometimes. the thing about them, though, is that they've got great (if overwrought) writing, and they're always up to date...

it'd be nice if there were others like that but aimed at different genres.

Garageband.com is kind of that way. They keep me up to date on bands in my area and so on. But they do miss out on some of the bigger names though. Its not a perfect site either.

I agree Forty. I've been a daily reader of Pitchfork for a couple of years now. I kind of feel like I have to wade through 10 of their often obnoxious reviews (and choices of albums to review) to find 1 worth reading or listening to. But I have to admit that the past 20 or 30 albums that I've fallen in love with have all been due to Pitchfork. I wouldn't have known they existed otherwise.

There was another similar website, but I've long forgotten it. If it comes to me I'll post it here.

right, pitchfork is useful by default. they're obnoxious, but at least they hire real writers, and they stay very current. the writers go totally overboard in terms of 'style,' but you just learn to wade through that.

here's an example of pitchfork completely missing the point:

"The Doors aren't so much a band as a phase you go through, rarely to be visited again, like so much of the high-school-notebook poetry that Jim Morrison's lyrics inspired."

i just wish there were something comparable for metal and hard rock. then, the prejudice might actually be useful for me.

Its not the best really but it seems to work for some centralized stuff. I know a couple other people using it for their town and it seems to get them results. Its only been around for a short time compared to a few others though so I'm giving it a little while to perk up.

Ya, they review a few but not as many as say Pitchfork. I have one that I get email from every other month, when I get the next one I'll let ya know what it is as I don't even remember it at the moment.
