Kids can be surprising sometimes...

Last week my oldest daughter was really sick for a day or two. As typical, when kids are sick, as in vomiting kinda sick, we put a towel or blanket next to their bed and a bucket, cuz kids don't always make it to the bathroom...

Well, whatever she had, I got Friday night. I was up all night sick as hell and in bed all day Saturday and on the couch most of today. It sucked.

Saturday night I went downstairs for a while and pretty much just laid on the couch. After a while I walk upstairs to go to bed for the night. I get upstairs and on my side of the bed was a sheet tucked under my side of the bed and spread across the floor with "the bucket" on it toward the head of my bed. My daughter walked in as I was crawling in and she just said "If you can't make it to the bathroom you don't have to worry about it. I hope you feel better tomorrow."

Now, while this post is likely grossing out some people, it does kinda say what big hearts little kids can have. She sought no praise, didn't come saying "Daddy, look what I did for you"...it was just a quiet, honest display of caring and compassion.

As parents, it tells me I think my wife and I are doing OK.

My kids never did that. Although they did always offer to get me whatever, 7up and the like.

Sounds like Flu season is upon us now then from your side anyway.

But ya, get well soon dB. :-)

Ya, my kid drank all my beer. Oh wait, it was ray that brought the beer. He didn't drink all my beer.

Its funny now, but I was really pissed at the time. When Tuna drank all my beer that is.

You know DB... if you really appreciated it you'd use it. :)

Probably one of the greatest benifits I've had left over from the military was all the shots... after taking the Smallpox, Anthrax, and Malaria stuff at the same time three years ago I havn't been sick at all... or maybe I just havn't felt worse...

(except for my bout w/ gout over the summer... )

Though the fact the anthrax injection(s) site STILL hurts worries me...

Thanks Geoff, that's nice to hear, I have been going through one of those "oh jeez I'm a sucky dad" funks lately. Kinda felt good to see something like that from my kid and a statement like that from a friend.

Oh, and if I recall it was Tuna I laid the smackdown on...I try to punch him at least once every time I am over there. :-)

zek, sorry, man, it felt better not to use it :-)

Great story dB-Wan. Yes, you and your wife are doing a great job! That's a smart, caring kid you have there. Well done. Nice to see that kind of think nowadays.

I wish I could get my 15 year old daughter to think JUST ONCE about anyone but herself... (I'm going to blame the ex for that! heheheh)
When she was little (2-3) if she saw me come in sweating from gardening, or cycling, she'd run to the fridge and get me a cold beer. Aww.....

...at 15 you'll be lucky if she thinks about anyone but herself for another 10 years or so, that's not bad parenting, that late teens/young adulthood.

I have to agree with Zek, I don't get sick that much maybe one every few years and when i do it's a killer. all the shots and drugs they give us ,plus smoking a driking keeps me strong :P

oh and Zek at least you missed the small pox shot, that sucker sucks mor than the anthrax shot.

no I got the small pox one at the same time as my first anthrax shot... I'll never forget somone taking a sewing needle and stabbing me repeatedly (20 times?) with it... and then sitting in a big muddy field in a mixture of snow, rain, hail, and heat the weekend the "side effects" kicked in...

Yep, it was Tuna he laid the smack, or headlock on. And indeed Ray did bring us warm beers that night.

And indeed, the teenage girl thing. She turns 18 tomorrow, and its all she can think of.
